Intro to Permaculture: A Weekend Intensive with Matt Bibeau & Leonard Barrett

This weekend-long workshop is intended for the permaculture enthusiast and newcomer alike who share a desire to better grasp the fundamentals of permaculture design. We're all born into the world as natural designers. We design all the time whether we realize it or not. Learn why permaculture is more like the lens than the picture, and why this matters so much in the way we understand and engage the design aspect of anything that we do.

To pursue permaculture is to re-realize our potential as a net-positive in who we are, what we do, where we do it and how we get it done. It is to learn to see the abundance all around us, use only what we need, and leave it better than when we got there. It is to see the hummingbird trying to put out the fire, and to not just root for her, but to support her.

This introductory weekend hits all major core topics and activities expected during the first two days of the full permaculture design course. Topics include:

  • History of the agricultural society
  • Foundations of permaculture
  • Ethics & Principles that guide permaculture designs
  • Assessment tools: Zone & Sector Analysis
  • Observation & Pattern Recognition
  • Needs & Resources Analyses
  • Strategies for Applying Permaculture Design

This 2-day course also fulfills the prerequisite to attend the week-long advanced permaculture course in Youth & Child Permaculture Education. (The advanced course runs from the evening of June 23 through June 29.)

We will meet from 10 AM to 5 PM Saturday 6/22 and Sunday 6/23. Please bring a lunch and a snack to share. Coffee and tea provided.

Workshop tuition is $120 for this 12-hour course. Participants who register for the advanced course receive a $30 discount on this intro weekend.

Matt Bibeau, MSEd, is the executive director of Mother Earth School. He received his permaculture teacher training certificate in 2008 and has since taught in over 12 PDC's, co-teaching full courses with Toby Hemenway and Marisha Auerbach, collaborating with many more and co-organizing area events such as the Village Building Convergence and NW Permaculture Convergence. He lived and taught at Tryon Life Community Farm in SW for four years before moving to SE with his family to support the birth of the school's newest program at Jeans Farm. Matt and his wife Kelly continue to teach outdoor preschool at the TLC Farm site.

Jeans Farm is a multi-acre urban farm surrounded by forest and bordered by Johnson Creek in SE Portland. It's home to the new 1st-3rd grade programs of Mother Earth School. Site partners include the Learning Gardens Institute, Rising Stone CSA and Live Honeybees. The school's 24' heated yurt serves as the course's warm & dry classroom, and sessions are held outdoors when possible. Jeans Farm is easy to reach by bus and bike. Detailed directions are sent after registering here.
