Rochester's Python Users Group
RocPy is Rochester's local (and only!) Python user group. We exist to give others the opportunity to work and play with local Python developers, learners, employers, and enthusiasts. All skill levels are welcome, if you are interested in Python, join us!
- Monthly presentation series: these are 45-60 minutes presentations on topics of interest to the Python community.
- We welcome 5-10 minute lightning talks.
- If there is an interest in workshops we would love to help coordinate them.

CommaVQ compression challenge
Wegmans Hall at U of R, 250 Hutchison Rd, Rochester, NY, USYuval Levental will present a project he submitted for a coding competition, where he placed third. It covers the commaVQ compression challenge from start to finish: the problem setup, why the obvious approach (using the provided GPT model) didn't work, and the architecture decisions that led to a 2.7x compression ratio with a 5.3M parameter transformer.
Additionally, the full pipeline will be discussed: frame prediction, quantization, and ANS entropy coding, with an emphasis on tradeoffs between model size and compression quality. Practical challenges like hardware reproducibility and potential improvements with more compute will also be addressed.
