Santa Fe Sierra Club Outings

This is a steep and high elevation hike (12,200 feet) of 6 miles. The pace will be mellow-moderate, starting at the ski lodge. Only hikers who have had recent successful high altitude hikes can participate. There will be two outing leaders for safety. As always, snacks, water, and clothing layers (including rain gear, if necessary) will be needed. If there is any chance of lightning the hike will be rescheduled. There will be fall colors and a forest bathing section to enhance our experience. The views of Nambe Lake, Lake Peak, and Santa Fe Baldy are spectacular. We can car pool to the ski basin.

If you want to join me for this one, meet at the Aspen Vista trailhead and be ready to ride at 8:30am. The bike up the Aspen Vista road to Tesuque Peak is about 5.6 mi. It climbs about 2,000 ft. It is a steady but not technical ride. (I will ride my e-assisted mountain bike that will temper that effort.) From the top of Tesuque Peak we will lock our bikes and hike over to Deception Peak then Lake Peak. That section is about 0.6 miles with a total of almost 400 ft. of elevation to gain. The hike from Deception to Lake will follow the more conservative path avoiding the exposure of the "high" route.
On Lake Peak summit I plan to take about 1/2 hr. to operate my ham radio. After that break we will trace our route back.
Make sure to have you have what you need to fix a flat, water, and snacks.
The aspens have started to turn so we'll have some beautiful views. Also expect plenty of company on this popular seasonal trail.

Meet at The South side of Caja Del Rio Plateau on CR 56C (Old Route 66 Route) at 10 am. We'll ride for about 20 mi round trip on backcountry roads towards Tetilla Peak, local canyon view points and old Route 66.
Expect a large variation of steepness and surfaces such as sandy, rocky, muddy, etc.
Total mileage: approximately 20 mi
Total elevation gain: less than 1,000'
Mountain/E MTB or gravel bike recommended.

This is a ride for folks that are somewhat fit and have experience riding on such complex dirt surface.
Be sure to bring water&snacks, a warm layer and/or wind breaker and fix a flat tools including a working pump and spare inner tube.
Any precipitation 1-2 days prior or the day of this outing cancels the ride due to muddy conditions.
