Marina Cleanup & BBQ Event!

Let's help keep our waters clean!

Power Scuba is teaming up with CoastKeeper and H2O Trash Patrol to clean the Sun Harbor marina (http://www.sun-harbor.com) located in the San Diego Bay. This location is worthy of some special Power Scuba attention. It was the world's first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) (http://www.usgbc.org/leed) certified marina, which means it's Green. The manager understands the importance of keeping the marina's water clean, but they need our help below the surface.

We can help prevent this...

IMPORTANT: In order to obtain the permit to dive from the Harbor Police, we need COLOR copies of each diver's ID (drivers license or passport, etc) AND SCUBA cert card (AOW or above) before we apply for the permit, which takes at least 7 days. (More below)

WHO: You, your family and friends. We need divers and surface support folk. It's time to show our commitment to environmental issues. We are looking for a big Power Scuba showing at this event. Attendees will get first dibs on the next two Scripps Canyon dives.

WHAT: This will be a one tank dive at a max depth of approximately 15 feet, which should make for about a 1:30 hour dive time. Power Scuba will remove trash from below the water. We will provide divers and water support. CoastKeeper (http://www.sdcoastkeeper.org/) will provide surface support and collect trash onshore. H2O Trash Patrol (http://www.h2otrashpatrol.com/) will pickup trash on the water's surface. Boat owners will also be out to provide surface support. This is a unique opportunity to see the underside of a marina and many boats. A permit is required to dive San Diego Bay. You could even befriend a boat owner! We may even have a prize or two to give away!

WHERE: Sun Harbor marina located at 5000 North Harbor Dr, San Diego, CA. It's just to the east of H&M Landing where the Horizon is docked; in the same general area.

WHEN: Saturday July 12th. Arrive at 8:00 AM. The event should run until approximately noon.

AGENDA:

8:00 - Arrival / sign-in / refreshments / gear setup
8:30 - Welcome / Environmental Talk by SD Coastkeeper
8:45 - Staging: Break into teams/ Briefing
9:00 - Cleanup begins
11:00 - Cleanup ends / photos of collected garbage / BBQ
12:00 - Event ends...enjoy the rest of your day!

HOW: Divers will make multiple drops (15' max depth) within the marina, retrieving trash that is then handed off to surface support people on the docks. Kayaks, surface markers and spotters will ensure that no boats approach locations with divers. Each buddy team will have someone on the surface monitoring for boats. The marina manager assured us that she will inform all boat owners of this event and stop traffic from coming and going.

BRING: All of your own gear (tank, weights, etc), including a bag for collecting trash at depth. A light, cutting implement, safety sausage, finger reel, and whistle are required. (There may be extras to borrow.) Bring a pop-up tent and chairs if you have them. There will be a secure area for your gear with someone monitoring it at all times and a shower for cleaning up after the event. If you have a kayak, diver down flag/surface buoy, bull horn or walki-talkie, please bring them.

NEEDED: Primarily, we need divers to collect trash. We also need a couple of underwater photographers and several kayakers for surface support. If you have an extra kayak or two, bring it for others to use. Non-divers are very welcome to attend and provide surface support. When you RSVP, you will be asked to specify which role you and guests would like to take.

CERTIFICATIONS: Advanced Open Water or equivalent and higher levels of certification are invited to dive. There will be some overhead potential diving under docks and boats. Divers should minimize exposure to these risks and dive only within their skill and comfort levels. There will be plenty of waterways or open areas such as empty slips with no overhead. Minimizing bottom contact will be key in order to prevent silting out and reducing viz. Use those frog kicks and don't drag gear.

IMPORTANT (READ THIS): In order to obtain the permit to dive from the Harbor Police, we need color copies of each diver's ID (drivers license or passport, etc) and SCUBA cert card (AOW or above), and an emergency contact with phone number. We need this before we apply for the permit, which takes at least 7 days. Therefore, the RSVP's for this event will close 2 weeks prior to the event on Sunday, June 29, 2014 at 11:00 am. All color images must be RECEIVED by that RSVP deadline, 6/29. You can email color images (.jpg, etc) to jweirick@gmail.com. (Simply take a photo of them with your phone and email it to me.) Or mail color copies to:

Callie Mack

8529 Jackie Drive

San Diego, CA 92119

If documents reach us after we have applied for the permit, you will still be able to provide surface support. So send them in today.

Even a small piece a trash can cause this...

PARKING: There will be some spaces, but it is best to unload near the fountain and park on the street. Carpooling is a good idea.

The drop-off area...

FOOD/BEVERAGES: We will BBQ! Food and drinks will be provided. Sun Harbor even has silverware. Starbucks coffee will be on hand. Feel free to bring something to share. In the spirit of ecology, we will have jugs of water. So bring your own bottles to fill, or other drinks if desired.

ADMIN STUFF YOU MUST READ:

The Virtual Donation Jar (https://www.meetup.com/Scuba-Diving-San-Diego/messages/boards/thread/9702303) is always out (for the Meetup site costs and general fund). It's strictly voluntary, but is very much appreciated and needed: Click here for the (https://www.meetup.com/Scuba-Diving-San-Diego/messages/boards/thread/9702303) DONATION JAR (https://www.meetup.com/Scuba-Diving-San-Diego/messages/boards/thread/9702303)

If you have not submitted a Liability Release for Power Scuba, please follow this link to the file, print, sign, and bring to the event along with your C-Card (scuba certification card). You need to do this at least once a year: Liability Release and Assumption of Risk (http://files.meetup.com/1307107/New_Liability_Release.doc)

You must also read this: Disclaimer and Clarification... AKA Terms of Service...AKA Terms and Conditions (https://www.meetup.com/Scuba-Diving-San-Diego/messages/boards/thread/5914647)

Anyone with a medical condition possibly counter-indicative to diving must have a doctors signature on a diving waiver form and submit signed form to Bill Powers (or an organizer) before they may attend any Power Scuba event. YOU MAY NOT ATTEND AN EVENT WITH AN UNDISCLOSED MEDICAL CONDITION. Doing so is grounds for expulsion from the group. Here is our medical statement: Medical Statement (http://files.meetup.com/1307107/Medical%20Statement%20and%20Questionnaire.pdf) Therein you'll find a Doctor Waiver form as well.

Attending any scuba event Power Scuba facilitates constitutes attendee's affirmation they are medically fit to dive, certified to dive by a nationally-recognized agency, have the necessary skill & training level for the dive being offered, have read the Terms and Conditions, and have submitted a signed Liability Release to an organizer.

Important Note: It is not the organizer's role to lead your dive (or to wait for you after you come out of the water). He/she merely facilitates you getting to the pre-dive meeting location. The Organizer will not assign you a buddy nor will he/she be leading the dive as a "group dive". Visibility and liability do not allow for that. Nor will the Organizer tell you whether you are skilled enough to make any particular dive. That is for you (only) to decide. When you enter the water, you (and your buddy) are on your own. You must plan and execute your dive with your dive buddy only. Once members arrive at the meeting spot, the Organizer becomes simply another diver.

Power Scuba bears no responsibility or liability for a member's loss (gas, airfare, hotel fees, etc) in the event of a cancelled event.

Your participation constitutes your affirmation you agree to these above rules and disclaimers.... and that your buddy(s) (if applicable) has read and agrees to the same.
