Hike Description:
Rancho Canada del Oro is a wonderful local hike in the springtime. Rolling hills, ridges, creeks, and spectacular vistas to enjoy. While the hike is somewhat strenuous, and you need to be in good shape, it is a pleasant day hike for experienced hikers.
This is a nice (but strenuous) hike along the Llagas Creek Canyon up Mayfair Ranch Ridge, with canyon and valley views, in a mixed forest of Bay, Madrone, Manzanita, Toyon, Fir, Maple, Nutmeg, Blue Oak, and Live Oak.
We will hike up the Mayfair trail to the junction with the Longwall Canyon trail (3mi). (Early out option to return down the Longwall Canyon trail back to the parking lot). Go left up the hill on Longwall Canyon trail to the junction of Bald Peaks trail, (1.6mi). Continue right onto Bald Peaks trail to Bald Peak, (0.5mi). Head downhill (steeply!) to the junction of Longwall Canyon trail (2.4mi). Return to the parking lot on Longwall Canyon trail (0.9mi).
Great vistas of the Almaden Valley and Calero Reservoir drainage along the way. Hawks are often seen soaring.
Bring poles if you use them, the trail is narrow in some spots, but mostly wide and navigable, however there is a steep downhill from Bald Peak, with some muddy spots.
There are some steady climbs, uphill in the morning, downhill after lunch.
