Volunteer at Upwardly Global's South Bay/Peninsula Career Summit

Would you like to help people in need practice their job interview skills and prepare for professional networking? No previous experience is necessary - training will be provided!

Today there are 1.3 million college-educated, work authorized immigrants, refugees and asylees living in the United States who are either unemployed or underemployed. In their home countries they were educators, bankers, lawyers, engineers, scientists, doctors and non-profit professionals.

Upwardly Global is a non-profit organization that seeks to help these professional immigrants reclaim their careers in the US. Upwardly Global creates employer partnerships that benefit from access to this talent pool. They also provide customized training and support for these new  Americans to give them an equal opportunity to find and secure skill appropriate opportunities and achieve their full economic potential in the U.S. The outcome is global talent for employers, culturally competent service providers for diverse communities, and family sustaining incomes for those who were previously unemployed or underemployed.

Upwardly Global has requested a little information from our volunteers prior to the event. Please answer both questions when you RSVP.

When: 12:00pm-4:30pm. Please only sign up for this event if you can stay for the entire shift.

Location: We will be in Building 330 (Redwood Shores and Bay Rooms). You can find me at the check-in table for the event.

Lunch will be provided.

Dress Code: Please keep in mind that while this is an event for professionals to practice their job seeking/networking skills, we do not need to dress in business attire (suits, etc.). Business casual and jeans are ok.

There is free on-site parking available. Here is a map of the area.

This event is an opportunity for us to work with immigrant professionals on one-on-one job interview practice and networking sessions. The mock interview session will start with 20-minute training for volunteers on interview skills. We will run two practice interviews with the program participants, 45 minutes each, which will allow 30 minutes for the interview, 10 minutes face-to-face feedback for job seekers, and 5 minutes for volunteers to fill out the written feedback form. We then will provide valuable feedback for the job seekers upon the completion of the mock interview. After the practice interviews, we will continue with a networking session. The program will conclude with participants sharing best practices and recommendations.

You do not need to have recruiting experience or be multilingual to volunteer at this event. Upwardly Global staff will ensure that all volunteers receive the guidance/training they need to have a successful experience.

To participate, the job seekers that we will be working with will:

Have permanent work authorization (Green Card or refugee/asylee status), have at least the U.S. equivalent of a 4-year bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a university program, have at least two years of professional experience outside the U.S., have lived in the U.S. between 0 and 5 years, come from a developing country, and possess computer skills and at least intermediate English language skills.

Please let me know if you have any questions about this event. Here is the volunteer FAQ from their website: http://www.upwardlyglobal.org/volunteers/frequently-asked-questions

This will be a great opportunity to help ensure that all members of our community have a chance at finding rewarding and fulfilling employment!

    Hi,

Thank you for your message and questions about the event. While the organization does try to match volunteers with people based on background, it isn't 100% necessary. Since we're primarily helping the candidates with their interview and networking skills, we don't need to have any expertise in their fields. I've personally been matched with people in several fields different than my own, and the event is still very successful. I would definitely encourage you to participate!

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi, I can help coaching those who are searching for IT jobs. If there are such candidates, I can be there to help. I have been working as a consultant and project manager for over 20 years.
If no such candidate, I won't be helpful as I don't have other background.
    Thanks for doing this.

I will sign up soon as I hear from you.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
