Flock Safety is a private company founded in 2017 that specializes in hardware and software products
for video surveillance, particularly automated license plate recognition (ALPR). It is estimated the
Flock Safety cameras perform 20 billion scans on US vehicles every month. Coupled with AI technology, these cameras can also detect items such as bumper stickers and bicycle racks to build a very
detailed profile of your vehicle beyond the license plate number. Concerns are growing on how this
collected data is being used, including security and violation of privacy and civil liberties.

This presentation uses Wi-Fi technology to detect the presence of flock Safety camera hardware. Wi-Fi
detection of these cameras is made possible by operating Wi-Fi hardware in promiscuous mode and
having some knowledge about the MAC addresses that are typically transmitted by the Flock Safety
camera hardware.

About Rob Schaller

Rob Schaller has worked in industry for over 30 years as an electrical/software engineer and has been involved in all aspects of product development from R&D to product testing and manufacturing support. Programming experience includes; embedded C, LabVIEW, Perl and Python. In 2023 he retired from industry, but not from his love of technology and learning new things.
