Backyard hens (Delray)

Details
This is not a Region 6 group specific gathering, but it appears to be a great opportunity to learn from and to network with other's homesteading in the area.

How to get, raise, and keep backyard hens
Sarah Hiers, presenter
A note from Sow Share:
"We had so many positive comments about the hen presentation in February we are offering it again for people who couldn't make the first one.
When was the last time you had a farm-fresh egg? Chances are, the eggs you buy at the supermarket come from a factory farm where chickens are raised on growth hormones, antibiotics, and artificial light. Even so-called organic eggs travel an average of 1,500 miles from farm to market. As a result, truly fresh eggs are very scarce.
But fresh eggs can come from your own backyard if you live in unincorporated Palm Beach County. Hens are permitted in unincorporated parts of the county, but not allowed in any county municipalities. (The event location is a home in unincorporated Palm Beach County, west of Delray Beach city limits, off of Military Trail.)
The presentation focuses on the basics: where to get chicks, how to raise them, and how to care for mature hens. It also touches on the role of backyard hens in food security and food justice – the right to safe, nutritious, and fresh food. Live birds and a homemade coo (pictured) are part of the presentation.
Sarah Hiers, the presenter, wants to give back to society in way that is hands-on and spiritual. A newcomer to backyard hens, she and her family started with six baby chicks around Easter 2012. In a short time, chickens have taught her how to live in harmony with them, and about the many benefits of having baby chicks and mature hens."
