Late Notice Hike, 11 miles. Withlacoochee State Forest, Citrus Tract.
The late notice did little to recruit hikers, but three of us had a fine day just as well. The weather went from fresh, to warm, to warmer. Since it was just us, the 'hang loose trio', why not improvise. We hiked the scheduled hike for about 6 miles and then decided to explore a road/horse route. It was easy to hike for a while but then it became very overgrown. Once we started through the overgrowth, we became more aware that we were being attacked by hordes of sand spurs: from sand spurs stuck in our pants to sand spurs stuck in our fingers trying to pull them from our clothes. It was great, if you like that sand spur kind of thing.
One thing we did see, as Ralph very aptly titled, was a very neat 'Charlie Brown's Christmas Tree'. It is a pine tree loaded with pine cones, but that's it. There were no pine needles. There had been a burn in the forest and all the needles had fallen off. Just the tree with barren branches with its pine cone decorations.
