OpenSCAD Introduction

OpenSCAD ( is an Open Source (free) tool for 3D CAD objects. This presentation is designed to give you a high-level overview of 3D CAD concepts and the OpenSCAD software, as well as additional tips to begin learning and using the tool yourself.

This class doesn't require any materials, but feel free to bring along your laptop to play along with OpenSCAD while Steve does his presentation.

Here is a link to a pdf for the slides to be used in the class.

Instructor: Steve Graves.

I apologize, I will no longer be able to attend. I regret missing it but hopefully I will be able to make the next one.

Steve, I am ignorant of the program, but will this let me create .STL files for 3D printing?

Yes, it is a scripting language that allows you to define a 3D shape that can be exported to .STL files. You can create very complex shapes. And they can be parametric. That is why OpenSCAD is the defacto standard for parametric designs on Thingiverse. In fact, Thingiverse has created a tool called the Configurator that allows designs that are uploaded in SCAD to be configured and downloaded as STL for anyone who wants to print the design.
