Big Data in The Real World

Big Data is now a really hot topic. We hear about it everywhere. It's not surprising considering the explosion of the amount of data produced every year, fueled lately by the mobile devices and the social networks. Yet, we hear very few real-world experiences of companies solving problems with Big Data. This presentation will be about how we leverage Big Data at Hopper to build a search engine for travel. You'll hear about the many hurdles we've been going through and how we solved them.

Sebastien is a hacker who transitioned from programming microcontrollers to programming distributed systems. He is currently the VP Engineering at Hopper.

To general on the Big Data Topics. Really pushed advertisement about the the start up company (Hopper). I was under the impression that the meetup was about more in-depth techniques about the utilization of Big Data Technology.

Logistically, the event was excellent. The presenter was a little weak.

was expecting more on 'unsupervised learning' as the title had suggested, though still interesting to hear about the pros/cons of the databases.

Good overview of how Hopper implemented and understand the troubles they ran into. Was hoping for more fundamental information, but this was good.

Talk was advertised as "how we leverage Big Data at Hopper to build a search engine for travel". But it said very little about what Hopper does with big data; it was mostly about the DBMS issues.

Could've been presented better - always helps to define the problem you are trying to solve first.
