Monitoring: Which way the wind blows

Synopsis: Monitoring is more than determining whether systems are up just as weather forecasting is more than predicting if it will rain. Companies continually need greater insight into their complex systems to know whether business processes are performing to expected service levels and identify performance bottlenecks. With the open availability of technology and services, it has never been a better time to capture system conditions, analyze data, forecast issues on the horizon, and broadly communicate advisories to relevant parties. We will explore the current state of monitoring at Bronto to see how these different pieces come together, the challenges currently faced, and the future of monitoring.

The Speaker: Andrew Feller is the Team Lead of Tooling at Bronto Software, Inc that primarily drives operations, monitoring, metrics, deployment, and automation initiatives. Being a Bronto off and on since 2005 after graduating with a B.S. in Computer Science from Louisiana State University, his devops perspective has grown from architecting, developing, testing, deploying, supporting, and overhauling Bronto's primary services. When not mitigating production issues, he can be found cackling loudly while playing foosball in the Bronto game room wearing some type of cat t-shirt.
