What we’re about
The Libertarian Party constitute the leading alternative to the Ds and Rs in North Carolina, striving to defend all your rights, all the time and to keep government out of your pocketbook and out of your bedroom.
The Triangle Libertarians meetup group is jointly sponsored by three county affiliate parties: the Durham County Libertarian Party, the Orange County Libertarian Party—both of whom meet monthly—and the Wake County Libertarian Party, who meet weekly. Most meetups are primarily social, but often there is a featured speaker or event; check the listings for details. Everyone is welcome to attend, encouraged to ask questions, learn…and teach!

Certificate of Need (CON) laws date from the 1970s. Based on the the then-popular theory that central planning could do a better job providing quality health care at lower prices than the free market, the NC CON law provides a rationing system administered by a government committee. The committee endeavors to determine the health care needs for each county and ensure that the supply of health care services neither falls short of nor exceeds that limit.
We now have 50 years of evidence indicating that CON laws tend to result in increased prices and reduced supply of health care services. 15 of the 49 states that implemented CON laws have repealed them…but in North Carolina, we still have one of the most stringent CON regimes in the USA.
Our speaker, William Allen, will describe NC’s CON law, explain why it produces results contrary to what was intended, and discuss the political prospects of rolling it back. Mr. Allen is the John Locke Foudation’s Government Affairs Associate and Grassroots Outreach Coordinator. Before joining JLF, he served as a police officer in North Carolina for nearly 20 years and was a United States Marine for four years. He graduated from Broughton—the same high school Pete Maravich attended!—and earned a degree in Political Science with honors from the Helms School of Government at Liberty University. William is committed to working with legislators on both side of the aisle to advance public policies benefiting all North Carolinians.
The presentation will start at 7:30; come early to get a good seat and take advantage of Tobacco Road’s top-notch fare and libations. We hope you can join us in person, but if you can't, catch the event webcast live on YouTube (or the archived recording later).
