August VTdotNET: Rachel Reese - Getting Started with F#

Rachel Reese is a long-time software engineer and math geek, who currently works for MyWebGrocer. She's located in lovely Burlington, VT, and is an ASPInsider, a community enthusiast, and a Rachii. You can also find her on twitter, @rachelreese, or on her blog: rachelree.se.

By the end of this talk, you'll be ready to jump into F# development. I'll cover the fundamental concepts of F# and functional programming in general; then, show off the language features, syntax, and constructs, and generally display the fabulousness of F#; and finally, make sure you leave with a few projects to try out on your own.

PIZZA & SODA
Currently we do not have a pizza sponsor. Please plan to contribute $6 if you want pizza. We'll place an order just before the meeting starts

NOTE SPECIAL PARKING ARRANGMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE WITH CITY OF WINOOSKI (thank you Onion City) - read carefully!

Free parking in the garage across the street from the Champlain Mill Building. Please park in the "permit parking only" section of the garage to ensure you don’t get a ticket. You will need to go through the middle entrance for public parking, go past the 2 hr and metered spots and around to the first level where it says permit parking only and you should be good to go.

While I've played with F# before, Rachel taught me new things about the language (like the Measurement stuff). I still don't know why I'd use the language, and I have concerns about the recursive nature. Having an introduction to F# is another tool in the box.

Good presentation. Interesting topic. I now feel I know enough about F# to be dangerous.

Interesting topic, F# appears to be aimed at more domain specific applications (like finance) within more standard frameworks (like .NET).
