Dennis Doire started programming in 1983; he's worked for fortune 500s like Microsoft, IBM, and startups like Silknet and Dealer Dot Com.

By request! Dennis has prepared an overview of the Actor Concurrency Model in Erlang.

Wikipedia has a description of actor model as

"An actor is a computational entity that, in response to a message it receives, can concurrently:

  • send a finite number of messages to other actors;
  • create a finite number of new actors;
  • designate the behavior to be used for the next message it receives.

There is no assumed sequence to the above actions and they could be carried out in parallel."

In the class I will show examples of this model and discuss its strengths and features. By the end of class students should understand the concept and basic implementation.

Food We're a small group, so we don't have a food budget; you're more than welcome to bring your own, and we plan to head into downtown Burlington for food and/or drinks following the talk.
