What we’re about

(All group events, including all meditation sessions, at the Vihara have been cancelled due to concerns of the coronavirus. While group activities have been cancelled, the Vihara is still accepting food donations for the monks from healthy individuals. We wish you good health, wellness, and peace.)

The Washington Buddhist Vihara is one of the first Theravada Buddhist temples established in the United States. Many well-known masters and authors have taught here, including Bhikku Bodhi and Bhante Gunaratana, who is the head abbot at Bhavana Society. Many find great peace and happiness by practicing meditation in the community of meditators here at the Vihara. The Vihara (normally) offers group meditation sessions and discussion from the Theravada tradition, recognized by scholars as the most ancient Buddhist tradition and the first to transcribe the words of the Buddha.

May you be well, happy, healthy and peaceful.
