Book Chat with JP Bird

On October 14th at 7pm CST, JP Bird will read from her novels with a Q&A following the readings.
JP writes cozy mysteries with quirky characters that make her laugh when they disagree with the laid-out plans for their story and take her on a different path. She lives in Winnipeg, Canada, and hates the cold weather but loves the winter months because they’re a great excuse to hibernate with a cup of tea or a glass of red wine. When she’s not writing or reading, she spends her summers in the garden and her winters plotting how to win her neighbourhood Christmas display competition. They don’t know it’s a competition, but she plays to win nonetheless.

Murder at First Sight

When her best friend convinces Amelia Wethers to participate in a séance, the newly minted psychic, barista and artist is forced to add possessed to her repertoire. Now, instead of seeing a ghost pleading with her to find her murdered body, Ami is sharing her body with the very hungry ghost of Henrietta Bathers, a Hillside resident who mysteriously disappeared over eighty years ago.While Henrietta seems determined to eat her way through town and embrace all the human pleasures and discoveries she’s missed, Ami and her friends, and family, including her new detective boyfriend, investigate Henrietta’s life and last steps. They hope that by finding justice for Henrietta and reuniting her earthbound spirit with her family, the possession will end.
Adding to the chaos, her boyfriend’s parents unexpectedly arrive in town, making acting “normal” an even a bigger reach for free spirited Ami. And that’s before another ghost—this one vengeful—appears, threatening the living and dead.

You've finished the second draft of your poem, shared it with a critique group, friends, your cat, but now what?David Yerex Williamson presents tips on how to fine-tune your poetry and provides insights into the submission process for competitions and publications.
Specific topics will include:
- Elements of poetry: image, form, tone, theme
- Poetic Voice: developing your own personal style
- Poetic Genre: free-verse, traditional styles, slam/spoken word, concrete poems
- Audience: writing for yourself &/or for others
- Editing: consistency of structure, form, themeSubmissions:
- To whom and why: contests and publications
- Knowing the market and where your work fits into that market
- Understanding trends and topical themes in contemporary poetryParticipants might have the opportunity to share a poem (40 lines or less) and receive feedback in a safe and supportive environment.
Presenter:
David Yerex Williamson has over twenty poetry publishing credits including in SubTerrain, FreeFall, The Dalhousie Review, The Antigonish Review, Prairie Fire and Contemporary Verse 2. His first collections, 'Through Disassembled Houses of Perfect Stones' (At Bay Press) was short-listed for a Manitoba Book Award in 2023. He has won or placed in a number of poetry competitions including the Lush Triumphant Poetry Award (SubTerrain) and Polar Expression's Best Canadian Poetry (first place, 2016. David has degrees in literature ad cultural studies and has taught literature and writing at University College of the North, Brandon University and the Universities of Manitoba and Winnipeg.2 attendees
