Purpose: To facilitate social interaction among Greater Southern California residents via a wide range of interesting and fun group activities.
Membership: Everyone is encouraged to join, whether young or old, married or single, with or without children. The larger and more varied the membership, the better this Meetup Group wil be for everyone! So please consider mentioning the group to friends.
Meetup types: Any event or activity that is safe, legal, and likely to attract the enthusiastic participation of a significant number of our members. "Significant" probably means at least four or five. So if our membership is 50, then a given scheduled activity ideally needs to appeal to at least 10% of our members. That probably rules out firewalking lessons and cricket-spitting contests. But if it is 500, then it need only draw 1% to be considered successful (cricket-spitting anyone?). In short, the larger our overall membership, the more specialized the activities we can consider and the more frequently they can be offered!
Meetup planning: If you don't see the kinds of activities being scheduled that you would like to see, feel free to suggest one and the organizers will consider it based on the above criteria. Members are especially encouraged to volunteer to become an Assistant Organizers to help choose the date and location and prepare the meetup description. Popular meetups will probably be repeated on a regular basis. Meetups that are not well attended will likely be dropped. From a planning perspective, the most attractive meetups of course will be those that don't require much planning or effort by the organizers, for example existing community events or resources that we can simply show up to take advantage of.
Meetup frequency: No single meetup will interest all of our members. Also, members will have schedule conflicts that prevent them from attending at certain times. Therefore we will aim to have a large selection of different types of meetups to choose from in any given month, some on weekends, others on weekday evenings. Please don't be overwhelmed by a flurry of announcements of new meetups -- just take a minute or two to RSVP 'Yes' or 'Maybe' to the ones that potentially interest you and 'No' to all the rest!
(Lack of) Dues: Some Meetup Groups charge dues. The most compelling reason to do so is to help defray the subscription fee of around $15 per month that organizers are charged by Meetup.Com for the privilege of creating and running the Meetup Group. Additional reasons include actual expenses incurred in connection with some meetups (e.g., table or room reservation charges). Finally, to be honest, some organizers view running a Meetup Group as a business and therefore charge members dues in order to turn a small profit. There's nothing wrong with that, but making money is not my purpose for creating this Meetup Group. For the foreseeable future, there will be no mandatory dues. However, from time to time I may offer meetup attendees the opportunity to make a voluntary, anonymous donation by stuffing a dollar or two into a coffee can. I don't expect to break even by this method, but it will be gladly received as a sign that the Energize Activities meetup group is living up to the donor's expectations of it.
Member responsibilities: There is no expectation that any member attend a minimum number of meetups. If you go to even one, then your membership in this group will have hopefully been worthwhile, both for you and for the others at the meetup! (UPDATE: I was recently advised that meetup.com automatically purges members who are completely inactive for several -- six? -- consecutive months.)
However, it is extremely important that you promptly RSVP for each event, even if it's 'No'! It is better to RSVP one way on spur of the moment and then change your RSVP later than it is to not RSVP at all. If you're not sure, just click 'Maybe' and come back later once your plans clarify. Because this Meetup Group is first and foremost a social meetup, members want to go to meetups that are likely to be well-attended. 'Yes' and 'Maybe' RSVPs let others know that people are at least thinking about coming, and that will in turn make the event more attractive to those who are reading about it for the first time. A lack of sufficient 'Yes' or 'Maybe' RSVPs might lead to a meetup being canceled, which would be sad for those who wanted to go!
No Shows: The most important courtesy of all is to not RSVP 'Yes' and then not show up! Doing so will not only disappoint those attendees who do show up (imagine there's only one!!) but also mess up your organizer's planning (e.g., reservations). The Meetup Group website automatically tabulates no-shows for each member and passes this information to the organizer. If you realize that you won't be able to make a meetup despite a 'Yes' RSVP, avoid being recorded as a no-show by changing your RSVP to 'No' before the meetup time.
Final comments: The larger the membership of the Energize Activities meetup group, the more varied and frequent the meetups we can schedule. And the more varied and frequent the meetups, the more members we can hope to attract! With your enthusiastic support and participation, we can make this the biggest meetup group in Southern California.
