When: July 20,[masked]:30 AM

7th ANNUAL FIRE ISLAND SUNFISH REGATTA
This is a fun casual race held every summer at the AMC Fire Island cabin. All are welcome to participate in the regatta as long as you know how to sail (no racing experience necessary), and are welcome to NOT race and enjoy a day on the beach. There is a $10 day guest fee for use of the facilities, which include sail boats, kayaks, canoes, beach chairs, umbrellas, fridge to store food, outdoor bbq, hot showers etc). For more info please see their official meetup: http://sailing.meetup..
Even if you don't sail, there are tons of other great things you can do at the cabin or Fire Island: kayaking, canoeing, bird watching, swimming in the ocean or bay, and just plain old laying on the beach (all equipment included in the day use fee). There are also two nice shore hikes one to Sunken Forest and one to the Lighthouse, both are very scenic and can be done within 3 hours over flat terrain.
In the aftenoon, after the race is over we'll take a little kayak excursion to a small island in the bay for excellent bird watching, sea life and maybe clamming.
MEETING PLACE & TIME: LIRR train station in Bay Shore at 8.34 am (leaves Penn station at 7.13am). If you live in Brooklyn and Queens, you can catch connecting trains from their respective boros. Check the schedule from the LIRR website for the train that arrives in Bay Shore at 8.34 AM. If you're driving, meet us at the train station, the driving directions are on the LIRR website. I will be in the first 2 cars of the train. At the station, I will be waiting at the eastmost end of the platform in the parking lot (down the handicapped access ramp).
COST: LIRR offers One-Day Getaway packages that include RT train, ferry and taxi tickets for $28 (http://mta.info/lirr/...
. You can buy these at the machines. PLEASE NOTE: The machine prints something like 7 separate tickets, make sure to wait for your receipt to print to ensure that you get all your tickets. Otherwise you'll have no return tickets and will have to buy tickets again!
WHAT TO BRING: Swimwear, towel, bug spray, sunscreen, water bottle, cash (ATMs on Fire Island charge exorbitant fees), lunch (you can also walk 20 min to town to get lunch, but if you want to spend more time on water or hiking, bring your lunch).
BBQ: If there any interest for a bbq/cookout, please RSVP so - the cabin has an outdoor grill. We can have dinner watching a sunset over the bay.
