With plenty of parking, heated restrooms, and the Alexandria waterfront to explore, Jones Point Park is always a great go-to spot for a winter hike. The freezing rain originally in the forecast for Sunday has slipped to Monday and the weekdays after, so let's enjoy a sunny Sunday morning!

The route: From the old ship’s rudder under Wilson Bridge we'll walk south to Mount Vernon Trail and follow the trail east along the waterfront to Jones Point Lighthouse. From the lighthouse, we'll continue along the trail through the woods, cross back under Wilson Bridge, and walk north along Old Town Alexandria waterfront through the parks -- Ford’s Landing, Shipyard, Waterfront, King Street, Founder's, Oranoco Bay, Rivergate City, and Tidelock -- before turning back and returning south along Fairfax, Royal, and Lee Streets to our starting point.

The walk is a loop/circuit of 5 miles and should take about two hours at a moderate pace. The surface is a mix of fine gravel and paved sidewalks.

How to get there: The park entrance is at the south end of South Royal Street in Old Town Alexandria. From Highway 1 (either direction), take Franklin Street east to Royal Street, turn right and drive south 3 blocks until the street ends in front of Wilson Bridge. The park entrance is on your left. The street address is 100 Jones Point Drive, Alexandria, VA 22314.

Weather: The forecast is sunny and clear, with a high of 40 degrees and 5-6 mph breezes. Updates here (http://www.wunderground.com/weather-forecast/US/VA/Alexandria.html?).

What to bring: Water, comfy shoes, and your furry friend if desired. The layered look is always stylish!

Advisory: As a reminder, this is an adult group, and you are ultimately responsible for your own safety and well-being during events. No one under 18 years of age is permitted.

Administrative stuff: There are restrooms and water fountains at Jones Point Park, the Torpedo Factory, and the Alexandria Visitor Center along the route. Parking at Jones Point Park is free and there is room for around 100 cars.
