Dave Springgay - HTML5, Android Webview and java bridging

In this meeting we'll explore Android application development using HTML 5, the Android WebView, and java components.  A web view can be used to do more than just display a web page or snippet. It can be used to build a cross platform user interface which is stylish, adaptive, and well integrated with the application host where it lives.  Specific topics include:

  1. Creation of a WebView with javascript support
  2. Injecting model data into the WebView
  3. Using javascript and CSS to dynamically adapt to screen size on phones and tablets
  4. Responding to javascript events in java code.
  5. Memory use and render time
  6. Execution on multiple Android versions

This is an exchange of ideas, so please bring your own experiences.

Dave Springgay is a Senior Android Engineer in the Technology Group at News International, the developers of the Times, Sunday Times, and Sun applications.  Previous to that, he designed and developed public transport information systems at Kizoom in London.  He also worked at IBM Canada for a decade, where he helped design and build Eclipse.

Doug Chisholm - Rippll: A web based solution for all devices:
Rippll is a location based marketing company providing platform solutions for Brands, Agencies and SMEs to quickly activate mobile apps and location based advertising. It was founded in 2008 by Doug Chisholm to address the potential of the smartphone for high street brands. Rippll has since delivered location based advertising for brands such as McDonalds, HMV and TGI Fridays and in 2011 Rippll launched a location based app platform which uses beautiful app templates to help brands get their apps to market in just 2 weeks. Many high street brands now use the Rippll app platform to help consumers find their nearest store and receive mobile vouchers based on their location

Doug founded Rippll after working as an Account Director at Initiative Media on accounts including Tesco and Burger King. Seeing the huge potential for location-based content on mobile, the arrival of the iPhone app store in 2008 signaled an opportunity to be one of the first location platforms to the exciting new market. His previous experience spans 6 years of software development and project management of internet application builds including some of the very first Java applications for mobile platforms. Doug has an MSc in Software Development and an IPA Advanced certificate in Media Planning.
