I too am sad, after standing for days in front of my local markets, handing out informational leaflets and prop 37 buttons.
The prop was ahead early on, but the huge conglomerate, led by Monsanto, with unlimited funds, was able to sway a gullible public with outright lies. Food companies frequently change and update their labels. It would have cost nothing to add "contains GMOs". It is absolutely false that our grocery bills would go up $400 a year -- scare tactics. Lori is right. We just have to stay positive and come back stronger than ever next time. In the meantime, I continue to buy "certified organic" and eat from my fruit trees and organic farmers.
All the best,

Proposition 37 - FAIL
Requires labeling of food sold to consumers made from plants or animals with genetic material changed in specified ways. Prohibits marketing such food, or other processed food, as "natural." Provides exemptions. Fiscal Impact: Increased annual state costs from a few hundred thousand dollars to over $1 million to regulate the labeling of genetically engineered foods. Additional, but likely not significant, governmental costs to address violations under the measure.
