When: Friday, September 14, 6:00 PM
Where: Click the link below to find out!
Event Description: Hello my fellow animal rights comrades,
Today marks the one year anniversary of my starting this meetup group, and I'm pleased to announce that we've grown to nearly 100 members - 98 as of now, to be exact. Reflecting on the progress we've made, it's great to see so many people showing interest in animal activism by taking the step of joining this group. We've had 33 meetup events in the past year, including dinner outings at vegan restaurants, vegan outreach leafletting and video projection on the Third Street Promenade, events at Animal Acres, and various animal issue film screenings. While attendance has generally been good, I hope to see even more participation from members in the coming year as we seek to gain more ground for the animals through constructive, peaceful outreach. I would like to see members contribute their ideas to this meetup group so we can make it better for the activists who are a part of it as well as the animals we represent.
In that spirit, I'm proposing that at our next meetup dinner, on Friday, Sept. 14th, each attendee bring a list of 5 or more strategies/ideas for animal advocacy and/or networking among animal activists to share with everyone. Please make an effort to get specific information on the how/what/where/who/why of the idea or proposal so we can all be informed and discuss it as a group. For example, say you'd like to see us have leafletting outings at an outdoor (or indoor) mall that's more accessible to you than the Third Street Promenade; then bring the address, the info about parking, if there are good veg eateries nearby (see www.happycow.net for veg restaurant listings), good days and times of day for outreach, and any relevant info about obtaining permits, free speech regulations, etc. when presenting your idea.
So far, 2 members have expressed an interest in sharing their ideas with the group. Aouie, who has provided the AV equipment for video outreaches, would like to share his ideas on encouraging Hare Krishna devotees (who are already lacto-vegetarians for the most part) to adopt cruelty-free dietary habits. Followers of other spiritual traditions, such as Jains, who according to their faith are supposed to be strict lacto-vegetarians, may be a receptive audience for vegan and animal rights outreach. Rick would like to share his plans for outreach to youth, in particular kids in public schools. There are lots of great ideas for peaceful, constructive activities we'd love to have which could help us make this group more dynamic and achieve remarkable results for the animals and their advocates (us) alike. If you're at a loss for ideas, check out some of the links on the "About Us" page of the meetup website, which Chris helped put together.
We'll meet at Real Food Daily at 6:00 pm SHARP for dinner. If 6 or more people RSVP "Yes" for dinner, then RFD lets me make reservations which is really nice. If you can't get there right at 6 pm, that's fine, but please say so in the RSVP so we aren't waiting around (RFD won't seat us until the entire party is present.) Even if you plan not to attend, please RSVP to show your involvement in the group. In the comment section, please indicate if you plan to attend the dinner, outreach or both. Thanks so much!!
After dinner, from 8-10 pm, we'll have the vegan outreach (leafletting and showing of "Meet Your Meat" and "Earthlings") on the Third Street Promenade between Broadway and Santa Monica Blvd. Look for Aouie with his projector screen and AV equipment. The Promenade is just a few blocks walk from RFD. If you are new to leafletting and/or apprehensive about it, please email me for tips or look at previously posted lealetting tips. Remember this is a "Friendly Interactions Only" event.
Hope to see you guys on Friday Sept. 14th!
