The Berkeley Path Wanderers Association is planning to walk all of the staircases and pedestrian paths in Berkeley on a 6-hike series over the next few months.  The hikes are free and open to the public and I think they would be of interest to the group.  This second walk in the series is 6 miles long.  No dogs are allowed.

You don't need to sign up anywhere, just show up.  But please check out their site and come prepared:          http://berkeleypaths.org/events/event/whole-berkeley-walk-series-part-2/

There are over 100 paths in Berkeley. This is your chance to explore them all!... Well, OK.  You'll get another chance later in the summer when I plan to do our own BAAA Berkeley Pathaton (about 30 miles in 2 days).  But if you can't wait til then, then by all means check out BPWA's series.

Here's what I learned from the first walk in the series:

About 70 people showed up. I don't know if the walks will continue to be as popular, but we may be joining a big group again.  This may cause parking issues at the meeting spot.  Come early and give yourself 10 extra minutes to find parking in the neighborhood.

We will be joining another group and there's no way for me to tell our members apart in the crowd... I will try to spot you based on your profile photos, but if I fail to recognize you I'm sorry.  If you recognize me from my photo, then by all means please come over and introduce yourself. It's a long walk... time goes by faster if we socialize :)  Plus I usually bring good snacks and I share :)

The group is prompt so please be on time.  To be clear - I am not organizing this walk, I am just following the BPWA walk leaders with the rest of you.  I am not privy to their route ahead of time. I do not know where we'll be 20 minutes or an hour into the walk so I can't be of any help if you're late.

The group is rather fast and doesn't take many breaks.  They do wait for stragglers to catch up but then as soon as we're caught up they take off again.  The walk leaders are 11 and 12 and have a lot of energy :)

Bring water and snacks and expect to eat as you walk.  There's no lunch and vino break :(

If you're not familiar with the paths, know that there are many hills and staircases. If you don't like taking the stairs when the escalator is out, this hike is not for you.  If you'd like to train and explore on your own, feel free to use my routes at this link: http://goo.gl/maps/fYJup Most routes are about 2 to 4 miles and should give you a good feel about what to expect on the BPWA hike.  Message me or post a comment here if you have additional questions.

More details on the paths, BPWA, and the series' leaders (2 amazing middle schoolers) are here: http://www.berkeleyside.com/2014/01/06/all-the-berkeley-paths-in-one-day-11-and-12-years-old/

Walk 3 is on Sat Mar 15th.

Walks 4-6 are not scheduled yet.

Thank you all for coming to BPWA's walk yesterday. I felt that they went too fast at times... But I still had a great time and I'm very grateful to the BPWA volunteers for organizing this. If you want to go again on your own, they posted a map of the route here: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3626319

We just grab a coffee and speak French. Some people have been coming every week for months... it creates a kind of warmth to the group.
