Mercury Retrograde: Practical Tools for Survival in 2010

Mercury, named after the winged Messenger of the Gods, is the planet we associate with communication and processing, our daily routine, and analysis and adjustment. In spite of his classification as a benefic, or helpful planet, Mercury's retrograde period is often associated with problems, breakdowns, and general mayhem. Even Rachel Maddow made reference to Mercury Retrograde in her news program this past January as a possible explanation of "why everything seems to be going bonkers right now." (MSNBC, January 7, 2010)

There is nothing inherently bad or destructive with Mercury's Retrogade period, but when we fail to hear what the Messenger of the zodiac has to share with us, we often create our own problems by swimming against the cosmic tide. Mercury always has a message to deliver, and when retrograde, his message is especially relevant.

Throughout 2010, Mercury will begin his three retrograde periods only in Earth signs, a phenomenon that is rare. Earth signs are practical and stable, cautious and reserved. Mercury Retrograde is a time to be receptive, to re-think our decisions, and to re-group in general. The sign of the retrograde gives us the area of our lives where we need to focus this energy, and the planet ruling the sign will show us how to direct the energy and where else we would benefit from re-organization.

We will examine Mercury's three retrograde messages for 2010. An understanding of what the demand of each retrograde cycle will be allows for greater informed decision making as we continue to navigate the ever changing waters of our lives.

Earth Day Astrology: Saturn oppose Uranus: Will It Ever End?

"What goes around, comes around," and "Everything old is new again," are two adages that are especially relevant these days as Saturn and Uranus continue to oppose each other through late summer 2010. The last time these two planets opposed each other occurred in the mid 1960s. Unpopular wars, issues of race and social inequality, extremely polarized politics, and much debated health care legislation mark each of these time periods. The old and the new are struggling for domination in American society, just as they did in the 1960s.

Saturn represents structure and authority, Uranus represents an awakening. These two archetypes are battling each other on the Virgo-Pisces axis of the zodiac. Virgo is the sign we associate with service and health, adjustment and effectiveness. Pisces is the sign we associate with endings and transformations, illusions, and a desire to hide. There is a deep need for transformation in our lives, which the Saturn-Uranus opposition has been making clear over the past two years. This cycle is composed of 5 precise oppositions, with the final two happening April 26 and July 26th. As these dates approach, time seems to accelerate, propelling us into a new era of self-actualization, even if we feel we are not ready for it.

We will illustrate how these energies have affected us and our society to date, and how they could continue to manifest over the upcoming year. We all must let something go in order for something new to come into our lives. Holding on to the past out of fear will not prevent change, and may well create more drama than it deflects.
