Details

Again, note the new start time of 6:00pm.

Up first will be our very own Christine Draper and John Sweitzer from ThirdWave Insights (http://www.thirdwaveinsights.com/). The duo will be performing their "Serve Meals, not Ingredients" talk that has been accepted at this year's ChefConf! As you read the abstract below, note the system's thinking ...

So, in a huge stroke of luck, Dave Mangot of Librato (https://www.librato.com/) will join us to talk do a talk on DevOps across the Enterprise! Dave is a speaker of international reputation and a well know system's thinker!

Here are the details:

Serve Meals not Ingredients

Business systems are meals. Nodes are a key ingredient. Do you configure and deploy business systems into multiple environments, with all the implied complexity of managing necessary variations and eliminating unwanted inconsistencies? In this talk we will share techniques for template-driven deployment of topologies composed of Chef nodes, and describe the latest incarnation of these techniques, which is supported by the knife topo plugin and topology JSON format, as well as our Automate.Insights SaaS based offering. We will also describe our latest work to integrate with chef-provisioning, and how these techniques could be used to map from existing formats. Bios

John Sweitzer
Co-founder and CTO, ThirdWave Insights

John is an innovator and systematic thinker, who believes that the real business transformational impact of software is still to be realized. He has a long track record in bringing leading-edge thinking to enterprise systems management. Before founding ThirdWave Insights, John was an IBM Distinguished Engineer, Chief Architect for Tivoli and for IBM's Autonomic Computing initiative. He has written two books and holds 20 patents.

Christine Draper
Co-founder & Chief Programmer, ThirdWave Insights

Christine's varied career has one underlying theme: problem solving in complex real-world systems. For much of the last decade, her passion has been making it practical to compose and deploy solutions from combinations of software products. In the past, she has had a variety of roles including methods researcher, systems integrator, security consultant and software architect. She is happy to now be a 'dev who ops'.

DevOps across the Enterprise

There is a lot of talk about whether or not enterprise DevOps exists, but one thing is for certain, DevOps extends far beyond Dev and Ops, even beyond security, QE, etc. This talk aims to use systems thinking to clarify what a DevOps enterprise really means and why it's so important to the success of the business.

Our Community:

So we have people from our community speaking at ChefConf (that's a big honkin' deal). They agree to speak here locally when we ask. Thanks Christine and John!

Then Karthik Gaekwad introduces Dave Mangot and we have yet another embarrassment of riches. (Another big honkin' deal)

Paul Czarkowski and Doug Palmer help whenever there is need. Eric G, Nick Silkey handling hosting at Rackspace so well I think it goes unnoticed.

We are an amazing Austin community. Thank you!
