I'm starting a Celtic Lore Study group in town. We've already got a syllabus, but no place to officially meet yet. I plan on getting those events on this list when I can become a co-host of this meetup. For that to happen I need to make it out to a few regular events first.

The study group itself will be an intense 45 minute discussion group where we discuss readers questions about the assigned reading & research from the previous week. Reading will not be based on books you'll have to buy, but rather freely available research done by the late Alexei Kondratiev, a very good Celtic scholar.

Yule is technically a Germanic/Anglo-Saxon holiday. The 4 marjor holidays attributed to Celts were Beltane, Lughnasadh, Imbolc(Oimelc), and Samhain. Alternatively the druids are known to hold new moon rites or vervian rites for misletoe. Celtic Scholars disagree on which is correct, collecting mistletoe on the 6th night or on the new moon.

Any surviving folk practices involving the solstices or the equinoxes are left over from the neolithic pre-celtic indigenous people who the celts conquered in Ireland and Britain.

Er, what about Happy Yule, Craig? That's what our Celtic ancestors celebrated.

Lindsay,

Thank you for calling that to our attention.  Being dominated in numbers by Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, we tend to overlook Brittany, Cornwall, Isle of Man, and Galicia and Asturias.  What an interesting group we have here.

Subject: [Austin-Celtic] A general reminder to everyone....

Hi all!

Just a brief reminder. I've had a few members express a desire for us to focus on other Celtic nations events instead of just Irish and Scottish events.

I want everyone to know that we welcome ALL Celtic nations into our group and would love to plan meetups around any event related to Celtic Culture.

That being said, most if not all of our organizers are either Irish or Scottish and so those events do tend to get focused on a bit more than the others because of our personal connection to them. Also most of the members that do give us input tend to suggest Irish/Scottish events.  If your heritage is from any of the other 5 Celtic nations then please feel free to suggest events to us! We'd be more than happy to host them, we just need to know that there is an interest out there. :)

Hope you're all having a wonderful holiday season!

Lindsay
