Making the Most of Mercury Retrograde

Mercury went Retrograde last week, & for many people, the thought of 3 weeks of crashing computers, poor communication, broken promises, & canceled contracts may be too much to bear. But what does Mercury Retrograde, an astrological illusion that happens 3 times a year, really mean, & how can we make the best use of this time?

Mercury represents communication. As you can see in the diagram to the right, the planets mirror the chakras, in the same order inside & out. We are, in fact, a miniature replica of the Cosmos, perfectly mirroring its form & function, which is why astrology works.

Mercury is the throat chakra - the voice, words & sound. It is the law of attraction - how we speak things into manifestation.

Mercury circles around the Sun in a forward direction every 88 days. It never actually reverses it's direction, but from the Earth's perspective, it appears to move backwards as it moves through the part of the circle between the Sun & the Earth.

If we look at the numerical order of the celestial bodies in our Solar System, Sun is 1, Mercury 2, Venus 3, Earth 4, etc. Two-ness (Mercury) creates polarity, communication between the two, connecting opposites. Opposites attract: words & sound create the law of attraction.

A good metaphor for Mercury is a pencil. When we communicate, whether writing, speaking, singing, chanting, we are writing the script for the manifestation of our worldly experience. (Earth = 4, or 2 x 2). The moon is nourishment, what we need to maintain that physical form.

Affirmation, prayer, & mantra use words (Mercury) & the law of attraction (2) with conscious intention to manifest (4) our physical experience (Earth) & meet it's needs (Moon). Some manifestations, however, particularly when created unconsciously by complaining, criticism, habitually describing negative expectations & experiences, may not be to our liking,

Fortunately, Mercury Retrograde allows us to turn the pencil around and use the eraser for a few weeks, as we go back over places that Mercury has been in the past, reversing thought forms created through previously-uttered words.

When Mercury went Retrograde last week, we immediately saw the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, & Proposition 8 in California, canceling words, previously-written into law, that prevented same-sex marriage. The Supreme Court also struck down Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act, the provision of the landmark civil rights law that designates which parts of the country must have changes to their voting laws cleared by the federal government.

Because of previously-spoken racial slurs (Mercury) by Paula Deen, her contracts with the Food Network, Walmart, Smithfield Foods, K-Mart, etc, are being cancelled.

And a new immigration reform law, just passed last week by the Senate, has been sent to the House of Representatives, where one congressman remarked that the House should "fold it up into a paper airplane & throw it out the window". The bill will undoubtedly be revised, edited, & transformed into a bill that is quite different, or no bill at all.

Depending on your political persuasion, ethnicity, sexual preference, or opinions on food, immigration, etc, you might be celebrating some of these revisions to laws & TV schedules, but mourning others. Mercury Retrograde isn't uniformly bad or good. It just cancels, edits, corrects, & undoes previously spoken or written words that had grown into thought forms & realities that may now be revised.

In general, Mercury Retrograde is a good time to edit things, make corrections, get a haircut, have a garage sale, & cancel plans that aren't going to work. Another good metaphor would be the planting of seeds (literally or metaphorically) during Mercury's forward motion, and weeding the garden during Mercury Retrograde.

In the 4 decades I've been reading astrology charts, I've noticed that people born with Mercury Retrograde excel at things that involve correcting, refining, revising, & editing, such as: Teachers who correct students work, film critics describing what they like or don't like, editors who decide what to take out of writings, hair stylists cutting or changing the color of hair, programmers who de-bug software.

Mercury Retrograde is a good time to correct mistakes, clarify misunderstandings, & de-bug not only computer programs, but also subconscious programs in our head (Neptune = 11, which reduces to 2) that may have been running our lives in the wrong direction. It's a great time to work on deep levels with hypnosis, past life regression, energy clearing techniques, laying on of hands, etc, to release & clear unconscious patterns before they manifest again. Getting people to tell their stories using active listening is a another great way to help people let go of old thoughts & feelings.

In this talk, we'll use the creative powers of speech, & ground them with the power of touch, to clear unconscious patterns, thought-forms, & karmic residues. We'll use words as seeds for future growth, rather than to reinforce weeds already growing around us.
