Volunteers for events and 2012 Fees revisions

This is the largest beach volleyball group on Meetup. I could have kept the group smaller or just organized only for the skill level that I play in. Orgainizing only 1 or 2 nets like most other groups and only for those I wanted to play with would have been so much easier. But I have seen how much people enjoy the sport and how much people want to come out to play so I have tried to grow the group the best I could to accomodate as many people as I could. This has created a lot more work for me especially in trying to maintain the integrity of skills at the various levels. It's also meant that instead of only being at the beach for a few hours, I am usually there for 8-9 hours on weekend events to make it so we can do morning and afternoon sessions to accomodate more members. I have tried to cater to all skill levels and both recreational, intermediate and competitive players. We are the only group that tries to manage skill levels and sets up to 8 nets on some days. To put up this many nets requires a great deal of equipment especially on those days that OVA takes over the beach and we are forced to use portable systems. I typically have approx 10 bags of volleyball equipment that needs to be transported to the beach from my car. This equipment probably weighs between[masked] lbs (the 4 systems alone are 200lbs) all together depending on if we are using the portable systems. I can't do this alone in the morning and the last few events I have had only 1 or 2 volunteers to help in the morning which is not nearly enough. I've basically had to beg for help each of the last 4 events. The greatest need is for people to arrive early in the morning when I arrive to help with equipment. I am generally showing up and hour and 15 min to an hour and a half before events start to make sure we get enough courts. As I've said before, the equipment does not carry itself to the beach and the nets don't set themselves up and I can't do it myself. As I have said before if everyone tries to come out once or twice over the entire season to help out then we will always have enough volunteers each event. I had dropped the fee at the beginning of the season to be the lowest of the volleyball meetup groups but since most people seem to have no interest in helping out, we will adjust the fee structure for the remainder of the year to allow for that. As we have been doing from the beginning of the season, anyone who shows up early enough to carry equipment will play for free that day. In addition, anyone that comes to help 4 times over the season will play the rest of the season for free. This rewards those that conistently come out to help (volunteers in May and June will get credit for any help they provided). The regular fee for all others will now be $3 per event. If you'd like to volunteer to help please indicate that on your RSVP. Please remember that this is not a business. The fees cover equipment and out of pocket expenses (new volleyballs, canopies to replaced the destroyed ones and BBQ's for the bbq events, meetup fees, gas, parking, maintenance and equipment replacements etc.) If this was a business then I'd be charging much more than $2 or $3 per event. I had one guy tell me that he paid his $2 so as a paying customer I should be doing more to accomodate him and make him happy for events he attends. Really ? If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Ed
