Hey all, here are some possible questions / discussion topics for tomorrow's meetup on "JUST FOOD." Feel free to email me back with other ideas or post in the bboard and I'll bring them tomorrow.
Government: Just how much does the US gov subsidize food now? Should we require "environmental" labels on food? Should we tax meat producers more?
Organic and (GM) Genetically Modified Foods: What does "organic" mean and is it really safer? McWilliams argues that some natural fertilizers are riskier than the industrial ones, and that in many cases GM (genetically modified) foods represent the best way to feed the planet. Should private companies have patents on the world's seeds? (Monsanto). Are all GM foods categorically riskier?
Meat: McWilliams argues that the massive amount of energy required to produce meat and its associated environmental damage means the world needs to turn vegetarian. If the environmental costs can be "internalized" into the cost of meat, should we not try to get rid of it? Omnivore's Dilemma?
