38th meetup - Cassandra and RIA

Hello all,

we are celebrating our 5th anniversary this month! We are so grateful to have you all as our valued members!!!

We have an awesome lineup of presentations for you. No commercial hubbub, but lessons learned in the trenches by teams actually doing big data for years already. And not just any teams:

• SimpleReach from New York (!) works on content distribution. Erik Lubow is not only CTO, but also DataStax MVP for Apache Cassandra.

• Real Impact Analytics is so kind to host us and probably requires no introduction: RIA applies data innovation on telecom data and was in the news very recently because of their huge first investment round (12M€!).

Considerations for Building Complex Systems (Eric Lubow, CTO, SimpleReach)

When people talk about building systems, they usually think about data storage or data processing. There are many other things to take in to consideration like data transport, capacity planning, monitoring, homogenous vs. heterogenous architecture, micro-service vs. monolith and many more. We will take a look at a framework for some ways to go about making those decisions and how that framework can be applied in real world circumstances.

A Microservice Architecture for Big Data Pipelines (Daniel Mescheder, Real Impact Analytics)

At Real Impact Analytics, we realised that some of our main challenges are no longer about processing data: Hardware is a commodity and distributed computing frameworks are ubiquitous. What is less obvious is how to design an effective architecture for big data pipelines that facilitates best practices such as modularisation, testing, versioning, continuous integration and painless deployments. In this talk we present an architecture that is inspired by the concept of microservices and showcase how we designed an effective and scalable development cycle around this paradigm.
