DIY Biolab: Using basic bioinformatics Tools; PyMOL

Details

----

Update: There has been a FUBAR committed. This event must be moved from 1 August to 8 August because the main organizer (me) will be abroad and return to late to arrange this meetup. I am really sorry for my mistake. On the other hand, by having the PyMOL meetup on 8th of August we will be returning to the regular schedule of having meetings every even week number.

PyMOL is a graphical visualization tool used to display, inspect and model biological molecules. PyMOL is open source (but you have to pay for support) and is extensively used in R&D.
It is specialized towards representing protein, DNA & RNA structures in a manageable fashion. No prior understanding of bioinformatics is required, but some basic understanding of biology is recommended. Please download and install PyMOL before the workshop. It can sometimes be a bit tricky to get up and running, so do it a a few days before the meetup.
Also, please bring a mouse! Pymol is very mouse dependent and finger fatigue follows quickly when using trackpads.

To install, follow these links depending on your operating system:
http://www.pymolwiki.org/index.php/Linux_Install

http://www.pymolwiki.org/index.php/Windows_Install

For mac users, we recommend using homebrew: http://brew.sh . Then use the command 'brew install homebrew/science/pymol' to install pymol.

PS. Thanks to Jon and Thorolf.
