Web App by Example: Node.js

This month we're bringing back our popular "News from the Bleeding Edge" segment, which we haven't done the last few meetups. There's just so much cool stuff going on lately in our industry, it's time to get back ahead of the curve! I'll be rounding up the latest and greatest info from the world of web apps to share with everyone.

We're also excited to introduce a new series that will recur over the next several months called "Web App by Example". The premise will be to take the exact same application spec and build idiomatic implementations in several different server frameworks. This should provide an easy way for people to compare and contrast popular framework patterns, comparing apples to apples as closely as possible. Think of it as TodoMVC (http://todomvc.com/) for the server side, covering things like server-side templating, routing, data access, REST API support, unit testing and more.

Here's the tentative series schedule so far:

• July: Node.js (Express, Mongoose, Mocha)

• August: Python (Django)

• September: Ruby (Rails) -- presenter needed!

• Volunteers for additional sessions? .NET, PHP, ...

This month's Node talk will be presented by me (Brian Moeskau (http://moeskau.com/) - @bmoeskau (https://twitter.com/bmoeskau)) and my meetup co-organizer (Corey Butler (http://www.coreybutler.com/) - @goldglovecb (https://twitter.com/goldglovecb)). I've been building a production architecture based on Node for the past year, and Corey has authored several applications and frameworks in Node over the past few years.

After the talks we'll head a block over to Buffalo Billiards to continue the discussion with anyone who's interested. We're really looking forward to it and hope to see you all there!
