Note: During the summer, we offer Baltimore Ethical Society members an opportunity to present topics and issues of interest to them. Please enjoy these informal Platforms.

For over two decades, a few members of the Baltimore Ethical Society have been gathering on a monthly basis prior to the platforms, to start their Sunday mornings with poetry. The poetry which has been shared has sometimes been composed by participants within the group and sometimes by "famous and not so famous" poets. We gather to enjoy the beauty of the spoken word. After the reading of the poem, we discuss what the poem evoked in us. Please join us on August 2nd at 10:30 a.m. when the platform will be the BES Poetry Salon. Please bring a poem or two to share with the group.

Biography:
Kirk Mullen spent 33 years working with impoverished rural and urban children prior to retiring as a school psychologist and educator. Kirk started visiting the Baltimore Ethical Society in February 1991 and officially joined in May 1991. In the fall of 2003, BES member, Karla Mancero, suggested the starting of a poetry appreciation group. The first meeting for that group took place on the first Sunday in the month of January 2004 and from then on, has met on the first Sunday of each month before the platform. The founding members of that group were Karen Elliott, Glascoe Baker, Brian English, Karla Mancero, and Kirk Mullen. During the summer of 2006, Karla Mancero moved to Washington state and Kirk took over the management of the poetry appreciation group. In 2022, this group was officially renamed, the Baltimore Ethical Society Poetry Salon. It brings joy to Kirk‘s heart to say that the Salon has never missed a first Sunday meeting since it’s founding in January 2004.

Mindfulness is a tool we can use in our daily lives to act in a more ethical way.

We practice mindfulness meditation so that it comes naturally in stressful times. Join us as we sit (on chairs) and breathe (just the way it comes naturally) and listen to the words of Thich Nhat Hanh, one of the world’s best-known teachers of mindfulness.

Description:
On August 9th, BES member Kimberly Sheridan will be the Master of Ceremonies for the 2nd annual Fabulous 51 Club. Join our M.C. as 7 more historical people from world history are introduced into this special club. As a contrast to the legendary 27 Club, Sheridan celebrates those whose impact on the world took longer to develop, people whose youthful years were either painfully ordinary, or full of massive mistakes that would have defeated most people. Let us give a toast to those who waited long enough for mature adult powers to plant themselves before embarking on careers that made them unique. Sheridan hopes these mini biographies can light a spark of curiosity for individuals to research them deeper.

Biography:
In 1990, Kimberly Sheridan took up canvas, palette, and brush and began to self teach the art of painting. By 2013, enough confidence had grown to tackle the labor of love called the Million Gun Victim March, a major body of work dedicated to paint forgotten and ignored victims of gun violence, gifting them to surviving loved ones as a tool to transform suffering. The artist admits being a late bloomer. That means at age 65, these are the best years of the artist's life. All the more reason to celebrate later bloomers.

Platform summary:
With the Doomsday Clock at 85 seconds to Midnight, George Wills said: “Every every moment of every day, the end of the world is two hours away.” Top secret expert Daniel Ellsberg, in the final weeks of his life, created a 29-minute film to educate the public on nuclear risk and urgency. In this session we will watch and discuss the film and talk about legislative efforts in Annapolis.

Bio notes for Arthur Milholland, M.D., Ph.D.:
I was an Anesthesiologist at University of Maryland for 33 years, retiring in 2013. Now I see myself as a big-picture Public Health doctor in that I am active in Chesapeake Physicians for Social Responsibility, working on efforts to reduce risks of nuclear war and effects of our climate crisis, plus other health, environmental, and social concerns. I live at a retirement community in Gaithersburg.
