Progressive Enhancement

This meetup will be a presentation and introduction to a technique called Progressive Enhancement. If you are web developer and have not already heard about this, well - you really should attend and find out more.

Progressive enhancement is an approach to web development that aims to deliver the best possible experience to the widest possible audience - whether your users are viewing your sites on an iPhone, a high-end desktop system, a Kindle, or hearing them on a screen-reader, their experience should be as fully featured and functional as possible.

This meetup would demonstrate the principals of Progressive Enhancement. We will show you live practical examples, and show you how to apply it your projects. Some emphasis on jQuery will be discussed and demonstrated in the examples.

This meeting will be presented by my good friends Todd Parker and Scott Jehl from the Filament Group. They are a Boston based web design firm specializing in designing interfaces for Web, Mobile, and touchscreen Kiosks. I've worked with them in the past and they are an amazing design and development team.

They are also part of the development team for jQuery & jQuery UI. They are also the creators of the very popular UI theme generator for jQuery UI called Themeroller.

They just published a book on Progressive Enhancement and will be giving away a few copies to attendees.

Todd Parker and Scott Jehl gave a very convincing argument for why you should move towards progressive enhancement techniques in web development. The room was packed, and there were excellent questions from the audience. Overall there was a lot of engagement. Afterwards, we had free pizza and food. Roughly 20 of us headed to the bar afterwards. This was an excellent presentation. I want to thank Todd and Scott for taking the time to present to us at Boston PHP.

The speakers were really good, both on the subject and on the talk itself.

Great job Guys!! It's the best meetup I've attended showing the practical applications and how to use the code...

Good, but the presentation would have benefitted by having an overview of what was to come, instead of leading to many questions that anticipated the next step

An excellent presentation on Progressive Enhancement that shows how it can be done by using a systematic approach. It is refreshing to see that there are some developers who believe in creating applications that can be used by everyone no matter where they are or what device they are using. Thanks for your deep committment to accessibility and the standardization brought about by ARIA and other related assistive technologies.

Fantastic talk on PE. Todd & Scott, your high level review and supporting examples were relevant and meaningful. Thank you!

Todd and Scott are not just subject experts, but guys who are soberly committed to solving a major developer problem/time-sink. Thank you for your work and I'm going to checkout EnhanceJS.
  • Mike Williams
It was a good presentation, a nice mix of design philosophy and implementation details.
  • Brandon Constant
Todd and Scott made a compelling case for PE and showed the best path to implementation using a layered approach. This was my first meetup with Boston PHP and I left feeling energized and inspired. I can't wait to start building with EnhanceJS.

One of the best meetups in recent memory. Great topic. Nice, well-polished presentation. I'm already implementing some of what I learned last night.

Great presentation. There is way more to PE than dealing with old browsers! I learned a lot and can't wait to put it into practice. Thanks, Filament Group!

Todd & Scott were great presenters - I learned a lot and have some solid takeaways.

This meetup was first rate and of the quality I expect from Boston PHP. Todd Parker and Scott Jehl gave an excellent overview of Progressive Enhancement in terms of justification, philosophy, general methodology, specific methods, tips / tricks and specific tools. Overall excellent!

This was a great presentation. It was well prepared, entertaining and educational. Many thanks to Todd and Scott who really know their stuff. They did a nice job explaining the topic and, importantly, why we should all care more about it.

I enjoyed the talk... it will influence how I build sites in the future, I think

Todd and Scott were fabulous speakers. They certainly know their stuff at a very deep level but can bring it down to our mere mortal level of understanding! I am going to buy their book. I am working on a new site right now and I realize I am going about it the right way, I get all the content into the pages and then add styles and JS. Thank you Todd and Scott, for sharing your knowledge!

The Filament Group's part was excellent. While I understand the desire to set the stage correctly for the presenters, I felt the intro Smarty template app was a bit unnecessary and stole some of the thunder from the main presenters.

Great presentation. Had no prior experience with Progressive Enhancement but am going to try it out now.

I learned quite a few things at this meetup. My next programming project will definitely include the principles discussed last night.

I think this meetup was excellent. Todd and Scott both did a great job with the presentation and found it very informative. After the meetup I went on amazon.com right away and purchased the book for my Kindle. Topics on accessibility for sites I never really considered, now I am rethinking.
