Developer Dorm Room (PHP Hacker Camp)

Do you have projects you've been dying to work on, but you're not sure how to get started? Are you looking for a way to get away from the distractions of home life so you can focus on development? Do you work better in a collaborative environment where you can bounce ideas off another developer?

Boston PHP Developer Dorm Room is back!

You asked us to do it again, and we're delivering...

We will provide a wifi-enabled room for 9 hours where developers like you can come together to work on your own idea, get some help from someone more experienced in a certain topic, mentor others, contribute to an open-source project or even come up with a new group project.

Experience the synergy created when like-minded energetic individuals come together to make things happen. We will also provide a space for small spontaneous presentations and learning sessions.

Want to show off your new site or work on your pitch in front of a small group? Or maybe you would like to give a brief 15-30 minute crash course on a specific topic.

This will be a casual, come-and-go-as-you-please event with no schedule or pre-defined agenda. The primary focus is to bring developers together and let them do what they do best. The details are all up to you!

If there is a specific topic you would like to present on or learn about, or if you have an idea you’d like to start discussing, please comment on it here.

Thanks to Bobby and Michael for organizing. Special thanks to Mike LeRoux and Randy Bone for helping me jump-start the development of jQueryjAM.com!

It was a well organized event presenting the opportunity to learn and share new ideas and concepts, socialize with other, likeminded developers, in a very relaxed and non-structured atmosphere. A time well invested.

What a fun day. I participated in several great show and tell presentations of apps that are in startup phase. Did a little programming of my own. Helped a few folks with tech problems and advice. I was also able to demonstrate a few projects I have been working on, and teach a crash course on html, php, and mysql where we built an app from scratch. Afterwards, we went out to a bar where I bought everyone a round of drinks to celebrate the success of the days events. Great event!

Where can you get 30+ people to hear your idea and give you 30+ cool ideas of how/what to execute, iterate, features to build and provide technical advice? Or learn the basic fundamentals of PHP from an expert in under an hour? That's what the Dorm Room Hacker camp was for me, it was an awesome event and will be at the next one for sure. Thanks for taking the time to create the community guys!

Had fun at Developer Dorm Room. I learned several new things from workshops and other php'ers. The Microsoft NERD center is the perfect place for something like this and the view is amazing..

I think we need to have this event every two weeks.

It's actually being held on the first floor, and people are here.

I'm here now on the 11th floor. The guard downstairs said a lady would up here, but the door is locked and nobody is here.

This event looks great, how were the previous ones? Don't forget to check out AT&T Mobile's App Hack-A-Thon on the 19th: http://bit.ly/ulKZNu

Amy, I am a beginner as well but I am still going all day.

    November 10, 2011

  • Amy G.

@Sam I still consider myself a beginner. Even the last event like this was really great and learned a lot. @Michael, really liked the open lecture format and gained some great knowledge on some CSS tricks that you showed!

  • Michael B.

    @Sam,
Yes - Beginners are more than welcome and really encouraged. You will find a great mix of both experts, and beginners, and those the love to teach and share ideas, tips, and tricks.
