About us
Please note: if you are an author who receives emails purporting to be from the organisers of this book club (Sarah or Mitch), asking for payment for your book to be featured, or even just informing you your book will be featured, this is likely spam/a scam and has nothing to do with the Brighton Book Club.
Hello and welcome to the Brighton Book Club. This is a group for all bookworms and avid readers, whatever your preferred choice of fiction. We meet on the first Wednesday of every month, in person at a pub in Brighton and Hove, UK.
We select our books by as democratic a process as we can. At any moment in time, we have a longlist, usually of between ten and twenty books. Twice a year, in April and October, this list is wiped clean and any member attending the meeting that month can add a book to the refreshed list if it meets our criteria (widely available in paperback for less than around £10, no more than approx 400 pages, not the second or later volume of a series where you need to read the earlier ones first). A few days before each regular monthly meeting I email the longlist to all active members of the Meetup group, and ask for three votes by email. The 3 or 4 books with most votes by email go forward onto a shortlist, which is then voted on at the end of the meeting to select the book to be discussed two months ahead. Unselected books remain on the longlist.

We will be refreshing the longlist at this meeting so please come prepared with your choice for the list. The criteria are, roughly: 1) no longer than about 400 pages; 2) widely available in paperback (and, ideally, in e-book format) for less than about £10); 3) not a second or later book in a series (first in a series is fine); 4) if a translation, ideally one with a standard English edition so that we read the same text.
Unfortunately I can't make this meeting but I expect to be leaving you in the capable hands of my co-organiser, Mitch.
