What we're about

Hello and welcome to the Brighton Book Club. This is a group for all bookworms and avid readers, whether you're into the classics, romantic or gothic literature, modern novels, plays, autobiography or travel. We now meet on the first Wednesday of every month.

We select our books by an entirely democratic process. At any moment in time, we have a 'long list', usually of between ten and twenty books. Twice a year, in April and October, this list is wiped clean and any member attending the meeting that month can add a book to the refreshed list if it meets our criteria (easily available either new from local bookshops or second hand online for less than £10, no more than 500 pages and preferably less, not the second or later volume of a series where you need to read the earlier ones first). During the week before each regular monthly meeting I email the long list to those members who have visited the Meetup group online during the previous three months, and ask for three votes by email. The five books with most votes by email are then voted on at the end of the meeting to select the book to be read two months ahead.

This month's book will be "Before the coffee gets cold" by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, available from https://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=30712739812 or https://www.amazon.co.uk/Before-Coffee-Gets-Toshikazu-Kawaguchi/dp/1529029589/ or http://www.kemptownbookshop.co.uk/ or http://www.city-books.co.uk/ or http://www.waterstones.com (who also have branches in Brighton and in Hove) Still very little idea of whether we'll be able to meet in person (it's looking unlikely for a group of our size), so for now we'll say we will be meeting online again, using Zoom. Mitch has a premium Zoom account and has created and will be 'hosting' the meeting. If I have done this correctly, you should be able to access the Zoom meeting here: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85181136963 Meeting ID:[masked] (No password but we will have a waiting room) Any technical problems, Mitch will be on hand to assist! We will be refreshing the longlist at this meeting, so please bring a suggestion for the new list. The basic criteria are: 1) Not longer than approx 450 pages, or otherwise easily readable in a month; 2) Widely available in paperback for less than approx £10; 3) Not the second or later part of a series, for which another book (or books) needs to be read first; 4) If a translation, ideally a standard edition to ensure we read the same text. PayPal link is paypal.me/BrightonBookClub - please do not select the 'goods or services' option, to avoid PayPal fees. Hope to see you there, on screen. Sarah
