JavaScript Meetup October

Gergely Orosz (Skype): Hello WinJS - Building Skype using Javascript

Javascript is steadily gaining popularity among Windows developers, as - together with C# - it is the main language for Windows 8 development. Most of the preinstalled apps like email, music and Skype are all written in JS, making heavy use of the WinJS framework. In this talk we'll do a quick overview of WinJS and see how it compares to some of the popular Javascript frameworks. We'll also cover lessons learned when developing Skype for Windows 8 using this library.

This event is English speaking.  Free pizza and beer provided by Prezi.

That table just served as a rough overview of what different frameworks are for, highlighting that WinJS isn't a SPA framework, but much more of a tools framework - unlike e.g. Angular or Knockout.

The Angular core doesn't have rich animation capabilities like jQuery on WinJS (), but I've changed this to partial support, as it indeed provides the hooks.

Custom controls stands for the framework providing out of the box custom controls. Angular doesn't provide these - though they can be built -, while WinJS has about 20 custom ones like date picker, appbar, listview.

But again the goal of the table was to show how WinJS is more of a set of tools then a framework and wasn't meant as a thorough framework comparison.
