2014 Kick Off the New Year Ride - (Brisk/Moderate/Steady/28miles)

While traditionally a kickoff day for football, this year we will be riding our Kick-Off the New Year Right Ride to help kick-off your 2014 new year resolution to ride more! (You did make that resolution last night didn't you?) We'll start in Kirkland at Marina Park and head southward toward the I-90 corridor running largely along the waterfront streets. We'll return inland a bit up Rose Hill and finish with the Kirkland waterfront. This social oriented ride will be conducted at Steady, Moderate and Brisk paces (on the flats); faster riders and better climbers are welcome, but for them the ride becomes self-paced and self-guided. Riders can ride on their own, in small groups, or with the ride leader. Printed Cue Sheets can be obtained ahead of time by emailing the ride leader by Friday noon before the ride. The draft route is at: http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3497158.  Riders should have 2 tubes, pump, and the knowledge of how to use them. The map to starting location: http://goo.gl/maps/AVDd0

Ride leaders are:

Steady: Al Miller

Moderate: Sandi Navarro and Judy Fyffe

Brisk: Carl Wainwright

It was great to start the New Years off this way and I hope to do more rides in the future. Thank you to Bruce for befriending me and to Gayle for my map and especially to Jane who patiently waited for me and told me how to get back to the start before the others as I found that my hybrid bike was no match for everyone else's road bike and I didn't want anyone to feel like they had to wait for me anymore.

Thank you for organizing this! I had a great time and now I remember why I need a hybrid or road bike. Hills are intense! I shall return with the right equipment :)

If you didn't have a hybrid or road bike, then what were you riding on? Don't believe a hybrid would be good for this though as that is what I had and still, I kept losing the crowd on the hills.

Thanks to all who rode today - it was a fabulous Jan 1 for a ride! I am home and a little sore but likely just bruises on the shoulder, hip, and ego.

Glad you are okay - we had a couple falls in our group too! Must have been some slipperiness out there today.

Great ride and start for the year, even if I was struggling to keep up. Not sure what my issue was. Oh well just have to ride more hills. So sorry you took a spill Al. Hope you feel better soon.

Great Ride...I am back at the start since I took a short cut by accident. I have no cell number to call.

Anyone coming from West Seattle to do this ride that I and my bike could catch a ride with please?

    December 30, 2013

    • Tan T.

I live near High Point and may be able to give you a ride. Email me at [masked].

Note that Marina Park is the location of the polar bear plunge at 1:00 PM. Just in case anyone wants to bring a swimsuit.... Note that there will be some traffic and foot traffic to contend with if we arrive back in Kirkland around that time.

Wow... big group... can't miss it. ..

Anyone coming from tacoma area? I have room on my bike rack.

    1 · December 31, 2013

  • MT

Could I catch a ride back to Seattle with someone who has room on the bike rack?

    December 30, 2013

  • Bill B.

It depends on the weather, my New Year's state of mind, and if a Metro bus runs from downtown Seattle to Kirkland without having to wait for an hour after the bus ride. i.e., it arrives at 8:30 a.m. or 9:30 a.m., assuming that it's on time.

Route 255 would probably do the trick but not sure what the schedule will be like...

      1 · December 30, 2013

Perfect ride to kick off my New Years resolution! See everyone in 2014.
