CHEW Series #5 - Steady/Moderate/Brisk/Strenuous

Climbing Hills - Eastside Wintertime “CHEW” Series

The CHEW Series will be held Sundays at 09:30 am on January 5, 12, 19, 26, Feb 2, 9, 16, March 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 at various starting points on the east side. These will be climbing routes on local hills which will progress from ~ 30 miles and 2500’ of elevation gain to 50+ miles and 4500’ elevation gain. There will be four paces offered -- steady (12-14 on flats), moderate (14-16 on flats), brisk minus and brisk plus (16-18 on flats), and strenuous (19-20 on flats). All pace groups will use a common route each week.

Please RSVP to Meetup for ride updates and to help us determine the appropriate number of ride leaders. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to 09:30 am to hear the route briefing, safety presentation, and sign the waiver form for an on-time departure.

Riders should be able to sustain the appropriate pace for their selected group, know how to read a cue sheet, change a flat tire (and have the requisite equipment to do so) and have a positive attitude. Ride Leaders and Sweeps will not stop long for flats or mechanical issues due to group safety.

Faster riders are welcome to join but for them the ride becomes self-guided. Riders can ride on their own, in smaller groups, or with the appropriate Ride Leader.

A limited number of cue sheets will be available at the ride start so please print your own just in case. The final route and cue sheet will be available on Meetup.com the weekend prior to each ride. Rest stops will be planned as noted on the route cue sheet.

A good headlight and taillight are recommended. Fenders are highly encouraged -- without them you may be asked to ride at the back of your pace group as a courtesy to the other riders.

Regroup policy: This is a training series so we will ride with the best interest of the group in mind. We will regroup at the top of hills for a reasonable amount of time as well as at major turns. Stops will be brief. Riders may need to fall back to a slower pace group if they fall behind. If you are riding in the last pace group, the ride leaders will make sure you have a cue sheet and feel comfortable to finish the ride or will stay with you as need be. We want everyone to ride hard but to have fun and get back safely.

Please print your contact information clearly on the waiver form in case we need to reach you for any reason.

This week's route: Starting from South Bellevue P&R, we will head east towards Eastgate and into Bellevue neighborhoods. We will drop down towards Issaquah before doubling back on Newport Way. A nice climb up to Lakemont, dropping down to Newcastle on the other side. A short stretch through Newcastle neighborhoods before we hit our only food/BR stop at Starbucks @ MP 20.3. A quick ride along Lake Washington before our last stretch or road, a clockwise loop around Mercer Island.

POIs:

- Stop: 20.3 - Starbucks

- Optional early finish, right-turn on trail back to P&R - 24.8. Cuts off the last ~15 miles of the ride, loop around mercer island.

- Optional Bathroom - 11.6 @ Lewis Creek Park

- Optional Bathroom - 15.5 @ Lake Boren Park
- Optional Bathroom - 36.5 @ The Lid - Mercer Island

Bail-out points:

- MP 9.6 - Continue on Newport Way to Factoria Blvd. Left on Factoria Blvd, Right on Coal Creek. Follow Coal Creek to 90 trail access.

- MP 18.9 - Right onto Lake Washington Blvd (instead of left), resume route on Lake Washington trail back to P&R.

- MP 24.8 - Right onto trail to South Bellevue P&R.

PLEASE NOTE - There are NO restrooms at the start location. Remember to plan accordingly.

CHAO: I saw your gift of Novaro cycling jacket and at least one of the BodyGlove technical shirts were snatched up by somebody. Thank you again for your generosity!

I still have some unclaimed CHEW jerseys as well. If you have not yet claimed yours, please come see me before the ride. I will have them with me.

    • Arsen S.

Is it possible to order a jersey still?

      February 3, 2014

Frieder. Woohoo. THANKS for a great route. Was a perfect pick for Super Bowl Sunday to give riders lots of options. Thanks Tim Johnson for the expert Brisk- 2 lead getting us all safely through the frosty bits, and Alexa for sweeping us up. What a great group we had today. Nice safe riding through the dicey sections. Fun day ... and sunshine!

Thank you Tim and Alexa for looking after Blue 2! Roads were really slick in the morning but once the sun came out, turned into a beautiful day for riding!

I had a water bottle turned into me after the ride. I also have a pair of fingerless gloves that were lost a couple of weeks ago. If you are missing either of these items, I have them and will bring them to future ride starts.

Did you know --- The Chilly Hilly ride is 2625' elevation ... shoot, CHEW riders do more than that before breakfast.

    9 · February 2, 2014

    • Scott B.

Last year someone asked if they would be ready for Chilly Hilly if they were doing CHEW. We told them it would be a recovery ride.

We can do two laps of chilly hilly right? ;)

Another fantastic ride. Expecting good weather, I brought my summer bike again. The summer bike likes to climb hills, and I got ahead of my group on Newport Way and 164th. Thanks Frieder for adopting me into brisk plus for the rest of the ride. Not sure I can ride that fast every week, but it sure was fun this week.

Cathy Henley, Thanks so much for your help today when I was "trying" to ride the route and you were actually riding the route.. There are some confusing , dueling rode signs out there. See you all tomorrow. I did get out of my car to cheer on Karen H. on Newport Hill, and when we passed the leashless dog park, had to get out and let Pepper have a good run (she is a good companion when I am driving the route.)

Pepper was very excited. All smiles as you drove by!

      1 · February 1, 2014

    • Cathy H.

Sam great to see you out there and your drive by helped us validate that the road signs bore diffeeent names than the cue. We had a good ride but got thoroughly soaked the remainder of the route!

      1 · February 1, 2014

  • Carl W.

I'm riding tomorrow, but will be skipping the Mercer Island loop. Luckily most of the elevation gain is before this point.

    February 1, 2014

I may do the same if it's going to be wet tomorrow.

Sorry to hear that Monica. I hope your shoulder feels better soon. See you next weekend.

      February 1, 2014

  • Alexa V.

Hi all, weather report shows no freezing temperatures overnight so I am hopeful that we will be good to go for the ride tomorrow. For those printing their own cue sheets, there are a couple of changes: mp 14.6: Cue says L onto SE 72nd Pl which should be left onto 134th Ave SE

mp14.9: Cue says R onto SE 79th PL which should be right onto 136th Ave SE). These changes have been updated on the cue sheet link in the ride description above as of[masked] @5:55 pm.

    February 1, 2014

    • Rick W.

I just noticed a small cue missing at about mile 40.2. There is a right turn onto S.E. 30th street between 110th and 112th.

Are we planning a strenuous minus group again this week?

    February 1, 2014

  • Wes Salmon - T.

Will we get extra points for wearing a 12th man jersey on the ride? :)

    1 · January 27, 2014

    • Micah C.

@Jamie yes, I've bought couple jerseys from them. They just don't breathe as great as the other brands like castelli, etc. The zipper from the jersey doesn't hold up well and the chamois from the shorts isn't very comfy.

      January 28, 2014

    • mike k.

I've been wearing my pull over jacket for comuting.

FREE MEN's CYCLING Apparel: CHEW's very own Chao is generously giving away to a good home 3 new cycling garments that he is unable to use:

    - 2 Gray Body Glove 1/3 Zip Technical Tees.

They will be available at the check in Vehicle on CHEW 5. First come, first served. If you grab one, please send Chao your thanks! See the photo album for a picture of the items. Thanks!

Is the jacket water resistant? I will be in need of a boy's garment since my son is borrowing mine at the moment. He is growing too fast!

      January 29, 2014

    • Daniel K.

No, not water resistant, but it's warm. He's got to start collecting gear sometime, right? :)

In order to allow Steady Minus riders time to get back for pre-game festivities, our ride leaders for that group will only be leading the first half of the route. Steady minus riders who wish to do the entire route are welcome to do so on their own -- it's a very simple loop around Mercer Island. Hard to get lost but print cue sheets if you don't know it well.

    2 · January 27, 2014

    • Alexa V.

We have had a ride leader volunteer to continue to lead the route for steady minus around Mercer Island. Thanks Dorothe!

Has anyone considered moving this ride to Saturday, so we can ensure everyone has time to prep and watch the game? Just a thought... Thanks!

    1 · January 21, 2014

    • Rick W.

I have a feeling that the regroups will be record short!...... We "should" have plenty of time to finish the ride and still get to wherever we need to watch the game.

      January 27, 2014

    • Sean D

And a very short coffee stop I imagine.

      January 27, 2014

  • Alexa V.

All -- While I appreciate all your comments about moving the start time or date, these rides are set FAR in advance of the date and cannot be changed easily. To avoid confusion, we must start at the advertised time and date. Please note that this route is very conducive to making it back on time for the game. Brisk minus and up can do it no problem but if you need to head back early, consider cutting off before the Mercer Island loop portion. The route goes ride by the park and ride at mp 30. Also, getting to the ride early to help us be organized at the ride start will be a big help.

    8 · January 26, 2014

    • craig d.

Just an idea but you could save time on the route by not doing the Mercer Island loop at the end with the group if you need to leave early. Of course, make sure the ride leader knows you'll be taking off.
