CHEW Series #9 - Steady/Moderate/Brisk/Strenuous

Climbing Hills - Eastside Wintertime “CHEW” Series

The CHEW Series will be held Sundays at 09:30 am on January 5, 12, 19, 26, Feb 2, 9, 16, March 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30 at various starting points on the east side. These will be climbing routes on local hills which will progress from ~ 30 miles and 2500’ of elevation gain to 50+ miles and 4500’ elevation gain. There will be four paces offered -- steady (12-14 on flats), moderate (14-16 on flats), brisk minus and brisk plus (16-18 on flats), and strenuous (19-20 on flats). All pace groups will use a common route each week.

Please RSVP to Meetup for ride updates and to help us determine the appropriate number of ride leaders. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to 09:30 am to hear the route briefing, safety presentation, and sign the waiver form for an on-time departure.

Riders should be able to sustain the appropriate pace for their selected group, know how to read a cue sheet, change a flat tire (and have the requisite equipment to do so) and have a positive attitude. Ride Leaders and Sweeps will not stop long for flats or mechanical issues due to group safety.

Faster riders are welcome to join but for them the ride becomes self-guided. Riders can ride on their own, in smaller groups, or with the appropriate Ride Leader.

A limited number of cue sheets will be available at the ride start so please print your own just in case. The final route and cue sheet will be available on Meetup.com the weekend proper to each ride. Rest stops will be planned as noted on the route cue sheet.

A good headlight and taillight are recommended. Fenders are highly encouraged -- without them you may be asked to ride at the back of your pace group as a courtesy to the other riders.

Regroup policy: This is a training series so we will ride with the best interest of the group in mind. We will regroup at the top of hills for a reasonable amount of time as well as at major turns. Stops will be brief. Riders may need to fall back to a slower pace group if they fall behind. If you are riding in the last pace group, the ride leaders will make sure you have a cue sheet and feel comfortable to finish the ride or will stay with you as need be. We want everyone to ride hard but to have fun and get back safely.

Please print your contact information clearly on the waiver form in case we need to reach you for any reason.

This Week's Route: We'll start at Marymoor, head up Sahalee Hill to the Plateau, past Pine Lk Park, through the Highlands and drop down into Issaquah for a coffee break at Issaquah Coffee Company. Then we'll get to climb the famous Montreax hill then drop down into Factoria. From there we'll head up the Eastgate hill, down to Lk Sammamish and return to Marymoor.

Thanks! Fantastic ride. It is a great experience to ride these with you. I am a newcomer, my second ride with you. I catched up you in the middle caffee place from the next group ( I was late to the start point:( ). I really enjoyed the ride.

Inquiring minds ... why is the climb up NW Village Park Dr called Montreux? Is it the name of the hill? The community? A bird that lives there? ... Anyone? I found no clues on the map.

    March 9, 2014

    • Cathy H.

So Chao's link says this community is " located on the northern slopes of Cougar Mountain." Ah ha. No wonder it was hard ...we broke out of hill mode to kick it into mountain overdrive. :)

'A bird that lives there' :-) Very nice Cathy.

Hey Craig -- Did you end up riding CHEW today? It totally sucks that you got the flat right at the beginning of the ride. If you didn't get a chance to ride Montreaux, let's get together and ride it sometime. It does live up to it's reputation.

No. My flat was fixed but when I put the wheel back on, the front derailer was misaligned and wouldn't shift. I'll try to get it fixed and see if it will work next weekend. Between this and the issues with my rear hub that's now fixed, I seem to have a high maintenance bike. Can't wait until winter's gone and I'll start using the Litespeed. It's a much more reliable bike.

I learned that trick from you, James, and now do that from time to time when I am over-dressed. Everything is always where I hide it...

I made the mistake of not taking off my jacket. That certainly slowed me down up Montreaux!

Which group was turning into Lewis Creek park at 1230pm? My kids were excited to see Daddy's riding crew come through :)

Awesome ride! I found a pair of black riding gloves in the Marymoor parking lot. Anyone?

We never got our chew Jackets and last week we were riding to the start line so we did not ask. Is somebody still bringing the Jackets for pickup at the start or we got to go get them somewhere else
    ?

Loved the route! Montreux was a new and challenging hill. We had a great moderate group today, enjoyed riding with you. The nice weather was an added bonus.

Alan T. Thank you for a very fun and challenging route! Montreaux climb was super! Felt great to conquer that bad boy!

    March 9, 2014

  • Tim J.

Montreaux has Pizazz! Sounds challenging, as compared to village park drive...

Great route, great weather. thanks to Bob, James and Alan for leading Strenuous and for Alan following me up "The Wall" on 173rd. :)

Sorry we ended up ditching you there! I figured you had way too much of a head start for me to ever catch you.

awesome! Weather turned great. Great challenging hill...

A bunch of brave cyclists are on their way to face the hills. Well, except Craig.... his flat turned into something way to complicated for me to comprehend.

    1 · March 9, 2014

    • Cathy H.

Oh dang. Sorry to hear, Craig. I was having a weird bike issue day, too.

      March 9, 2014

    • craig d.

Not sure what's wrong with it now but it's become somewhat unreliable this year. Hopefully I can ride next weekend.

Alan. Great job on this route (and extra brownie points for the good weather)! Dorothe, thanks for the admin and nice send off. Great group in Brisk Minus once again. Joe, thanks for running with the sweep baton after my bike failure.

So, I'm confident Alexa will ride with me on tomorrow's Wet Fest, who else is in...??

    March 8, 2014

    • Tim T.

Hopefully you will get less rain than we had over on Hood Canal today on the ride tomorrow. We had over 3 inches! What fun working outside in the rain.

      March 8, 2014

    • craig d.

Sigh. The rain gear's still drying out but should be dry by morning. Isn't it supposed to be a little better tomorrow.

      2 · March 8, 2014

  • Alexa V.

Forecast calls for light rain that turns into showers. NOT as bad as today. I am staying optimistic. Come with rain gear and plan to ride!

    1 · March 8, 2014

    • Tim T.

Ah I think you are always optimistic Alexa! Even when there is snow! But hope it is better for you all tomorrow.

How long will the 'steady' group take to complete this route, more or less? Thanks!

    March 7, 2014

    • Scott B.

Yeah - my _general_ rule of thumb is figure on averaging around 10mph looking at a clock...but that's going to vary depending on how fast folks are feeling up the hills and how long of a rest break they need and so forth.

The cue sheet pdf won't download for me either, but I can print the cue sheet from the RideWithGps link.

Can anyone access the cue sheet? I'm having problems.

    March 6, 2014

It wasn't working for me a day or so ago, but it worked for me just now.
