Get on Your Bike: Tour de Broadway!

Details

Welcome to Get on Your Bike, Seattle-style! Whether you are new, returning, or just open to learning, this is the time to get on your bike! Join us on short rides around Capitol Hill, Downtown and the Central District, with stops for coffee shops, photo-ops, high fives, and free snacks (that’s right!).

Our rides will vary from 3 to 10 miles in length, and will be as flat as we can make them! All skill levels welcome! We will stay together, and the slowest rider sets the pace. It’s also fine to get off and walk a bit if you need to. Please join us if you appreciate a slow, social ride with educational aspects.

This week we will be riding down Broadway, checking out the bike infrastructure and interesting sights and sounds of Capitol Hill. We will ride back up to Volunteer Park on low traffic streets, stopping at the Japanese American Remembrance Garden (https://www.nvcfoundation.org/newsletter/2004/12/japanese-american-remembrance-garden/) and maybe a coffeehouse along the way! Route details and updates will be posted in the comments section on the Cascade calendar posting (https://www.cascade.org/node/26139) 2-3 days before the ride.

Ride leader: I am a born-and-raised Seattleite with a passion for bike exploration and education. Each week I will focus on safe riding skills, group riding communication skills, urban cycling techniques, how to make riding Seattle terrain (read: hills) more comfortable and fun, finding and celebrating bike infrastructure, and basic mechanical tips.

What to bring: Helmets are required! Bring a full water bottle, empty bladder, light snack, ID, money for food or coffee, a bike lock for stops, etc.

What to expect: Expect to spend 15 minutes at the start of each ride signing the ride waiver (you can pre-register with a Cascade account by clicking "register" under the ride title here (https://www.cascade.org/node/26139)) and doing a bike and helmet check, a safety briefing, and a route overview. Please arrive early if you plan to fill your water bottle or use the restrooms at the start.

Weather: If the weather looks dire, the ride will be cancelled 2 hours before the ride. Ride cancellation will be posted in the comments section of the Cascade calendar posting (https://www.cascade.org/node/26139) at least 2 hours before the ride. If weather is bad at the ride start, ride leader will make a cancellation decision then.

Parking: There is free parking in Volunteer Park. Riders are also encouraged to ride their bikes or take transit to the ride start! The Capitol Hill Light Rail station is about a mile from Volunteer Park, and the #10 bus stops at the Light Rail station and runs from Downtown to Volunteer Park, while the #49 runs from University District to Downtown, stopping two blocks west of Volunteer Park on 10th Ave E and Galer/Prospect.
