Getting Ready to Ride: Week Five – Marymoor to Education and English Hills

Are you planning on riding in your first STP or RSVP but aren’t sure if you are “ready” to start training in the Cascade Training Series (CTS) or in the Daily Rides programs? Or are you trying to fulfill a New Year’s Resolution to do more Daily Rides but aren’t sure if you are ready to jump in and start riding with the Daily Rides? If either of these situations (or perhaps another one) describes you, then you may want to consider joining one or more of our Getting Ready Rides Series. This series will be held on 6 Saturdays starting at 11:30 am at various East Side locations.

We will hold our fifth Getting Ready to Ride event on Saturday 09 March 2013 which will leave from Marymoor Park East (http://goo.gl/maps/2wGZ7) at 11:30 am. Our fifth ride will be circa 26 miles and will use back road paths up Education and English Hills – you may see parts of these areas not typically seen from a car! These are great training hills for early season riding. Rides will be conducted at two paces and you can select the pace that best fits for you – A Leisurely paced group (10-12 mph on the flats, aka The “Red” group in CTS) and a Steady paced group (12-14 mph on the flats, aka The “Yellow” group in CTS).

The route map is at http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1985067 . Printed cue sheets will be available at the start and can be obtained electronically by Friday noon prior to the ride from the Ride Leader. Please plan to arrive by 11:15 so we can process the ride waiver, do equipment checks, and discuss the route. We anticipate the ride will last 2.5-3 hours depending on how the day goes. We will also discuss group interest in related skills for riding such as tire changing, the ABC checks for riding, simple bike upkeep, etc. Please consult the Cascade Bicycle Club Daily Rides web page for information for riders (http://www.cascade.org/EandR/rides_newcomer_instruction.cfm) as helmets and so forth are required for the ride. Scheduled ride dates are 9 Feb, 16 Feb, 23 Feb, 2 Mar, 9 Mar, and 16 March. Each ride will have a different starting point as posted on the Cascade Daily Rides calendar page (http://www.cascade.org/EandR/Activities_Calendar.cfm?query=cascadefreedailyride ) and under the Cascade Free Daily Rides subgroup of meetup.com (http://www.meetup.com/cascaderides/).

Hey, you really have done a great job putting this together with the ride leaders. Enjoyed sweeping away with the yellow group. CTS is going to be a breeze for all of these riders.

I've had so much fun leading the 10-12 mph group these last two weeks. All of you have such positive attitudes and are so much fun. Thanks to Al Miller for such a beautiful route. Hope to see all of you for our last GRTR this Saturday!

Wow! This getting to ride series has been great. I have participated in the "red 10-12 mph" group for the entire series. I personally have noticed tremendous improvement in my ability to attack the hills. This week's ride was even more fun due to of the great weather and the camaraderie of the fellow bikers! See everyone next week.

Well, I guess we won't be making it after all. I somehow took a spill about six blocks from home and cut up my hand through my seemingly nonprotective gloves. I'm going to go have a private pity party then go out on my own. See you all next week!

I have a bad gash in my leg that I don't think has healed up enough for the ride! Have fun everyone.

We'll actually break into smaller riding groups based on how many people are present - last week we ran 5 groups total at the two paces. We should have at least 8 Ride Leaders committed at this point plus maybe a couple of more who come out to join us.

I have had a question about the route at mile 11.5 - The cue sheet is correct but the roads can be a little confusing as they weave and turn - as you come up the hill on 172nd Ave NE at about mile 11.5 you will come to the L turn onto 172nd Ave NE - the key here is to realize that the road you are on is changing names to NE 144th St. The sign at the corner will show 172nd Ave NE turning left along with a small sign saying "Private Road"; the sign will also show NE 144th St as the new name of the main road you have been on as it veers to the right.

When you cross the bike/pedestrian gate at the end of the private road, the road you come to is NE 145th St although I do not believe it is signed when you intersect it.

I have shared this info with the RL's - this is a fun route with lots of local character. Hopefully the good weather will hold for us!!

Updated the ride information and cue sheets under Files for this week's ride - http://files.meetup.com/3386582/05_Winter_Getting_Ready_Ride_Educ_English_Hills_09_Mar_2013_2013.pdf

The ride url is still http://ridewithgps.com/routes/1985067 Looking like good weather for a super ride! Please try to come a few minutes early since the check in takes a little time with so many great riders - and it is always a fun time to catch up with others and look over a few bikes!

Looking like it might be a good day on Saturday but this is the Pacific Northwest.....so be ready for whatever! Also we talked to several of you about your apparent capability for a higher riding speed; accordingly we will offer a Yellow + pace for those wanting to try out a higher speed prior to the start of CTS or other Daily Rides. We will still have the usual Yellow and Red paced groups as well. Our plan is to offer that slightly higher pace for people to try for GR2R #5 and GR2R #6. Overall, this week's route builds in a few more miles and a few more feet of climbing although the pitches may not be quite as steep as last week. See you all at the start!!

Andy, I suggest starting out in the last Yellow group (there will be several). If you can't keep the Yellow pace the Red group will be right behind you can just drop back.

The link to ride with gps does not begin at Marymoor. It begins at Wilmot Gateway Park.

Susan: Looks like the route map was incorrectly posted - the correct url is : http://ridewithgps.co... We'll work to change the Cascade web site tomorrow - thanks for the heads up!
