I would be interested in knowing at which drum circle you witnessed this event of chastisement.
There are no official rules of a drum circle.
There some common sense guidelines.
It is a group event and as such it follows an anarchist form of government with regard to what is being played.
If it is not yours ask before using someone elses instruments, chair and so on.
Play to your level, if you are just starting out don't get fancy.
Don't do things that are illegal as this jeopardizes the event space for everyone else.
Follow the Golden Rule.
If you brought your children then watch your children.
Don't spin fire unless you have permission to spin fire from the event location.
If there is a fire then don't mess with it unless you ask the Event Coordinator
Support the circle and do help out, no one gets rich off of drum circles, but donations of money, or wood, of assistance is greatly appreciated and help keep the circle alive down the road.
Did I mention Common Sense and Acting like an Adult are always helpful too.
Hope that helps.

What are the formal RULES of a drum circle as I have witnessed chastisement by fellow drummers regarding behavior that was not offensive and thought it was a free and creative venue????????? Please publish online the RULES.
