Many thanks to Marian Casey for her informative presentation on social networking in January.

Join us on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at 7PM with Lon Taylor who will present "How Usability Research Strengthens the Interactive Design & Development Process to Achieve Success." Lon Taylor, Principal Usability Consultant at First Insights, will deliver an overview of various usability research methodologies and explain how they fit into a project lifecycle. Case studies will be presented to offer specifics on how design and development challenges were solved by listening to the target audience of end users. Lon will share a comprehensive view of how designers and developers can work usability research into the project plan to help save time, aggravation and costs during an engagement.

The questions Lon will address include:

  • Why bother talking to users in the first place?
  • What research methodologies can be used to help you understand what your customers are thinking in our rapidly changing business environment?
  • Why does usability testing play a critical role in helping you pinpoint details during a site build?
  • The initial research on LHW.com and Whitney.org ? What did we ask? How did we uncover details that had been overlooked? What were the results?
  • As a designer or developer, what do you do when the study findings are tough to digest?
  • How can you accurately present key findings that generate stakeholder action?
  • What types of budgets are typical for usability research?

Over the past 15 years Lon Taylor has cultivated his usability research, digital branding and strategic marketing skills by achieving measurable results for Fortune 500 firms and successful start-ups. Having filled a variety of roles as a usability moderator, senior project manager and information architect, Lon understands how to deliver ideas that positively impact the direction, timing and budget of complex interface development projects. Working at Blue Marble/Novo (Publicis) during the dotcom boom years Lon worked on projects for GM, Procter & Gamble, Continental Airlines and Hewlett-Packard. Since launching First Insights in 2004 clients have included American Airlines, Pfizer, The New York Times, Ford, JP Morgan Chase, Kellogg's and the top four advertising agency holding companies.

An active participant in the new media community since 1995, Lon was co-founder of the New York Research SIG. He's also a member of the Usability Professionals Association, and has co-chaired Guerilla Marketing and Viral Marketing conferences for the Institute for International Research.

We will be meeting at Boocoo Cultural Center, 1823 Church Street, Evanston 60201. There is a free parking lot across the street that belongs to Evanston Township High School that is open for our use. Otherwise, there should be ample street parking along Dodge Avenue or Church Street. Like any semi-urban area, there have been crime reports in this neighborhood in the past. There is no need to be unduly alarmed... just use good sense as you come and go to your car. If you change your mind about coming, please do us the courtesy of changing your RSVP to "NO" to make room for other attendees.

Mark your calendars for some interesting upcoming sessions. I am hoping to secure a speaking commitment from John Coonen with the Content Management System Association for March. They will host the Content Management System Expo here in Evanston this May! So stay tuned...

I look forward to seeing you February 9.
