When Julie signed up this week, we hit the 300 members milestone. We are up to the 5th biggest group behind some political groups, poker players and wine drinkers. That is not too bad considering independent and foreign movies don't have a wide audience.
We are looking forward to more great movies in 2008. As always, if you have an idea for a future movie event, you can email us (including Cindy and Michael); just give us several weeks notice. Better yet, if you want to make the event more spontaneous, we will post a note on that date.
I am often asked the purpose of the group.
Our intent is to ferret out unique movies that might be missed otherwise. Secondly, many of us have friends who wouldn't attend an independent movie as long as Rambo is alive, much less be willing to discuss it over coffee. I always enjoy our post-movie get together.
Little known fact: many mainstream classics like Pulp Fiction, Crash and Four Weddings and a Funeral were originally independent movies.
I hope to see you all at a movie event soon. Also, don't forget about the Cleveland Film Festival independent shorts party on January 11.
Declare your independence from the multiplexes and see an independent, foreign classic, documentary or any thought provoking movie. We meet at landmarks like the Cedar Lee, Cinematheque, Art Museum, or a university and work in dinner at a locally owned restaurant either before or afterward. Perhaps the best part is walking to a local pub and engaging others on the film's true meaning.
Cost to attend: $1.50 per movie or $5 for the year. Your first movie with the group is free. Fees are waived for active assistant organizers of this group or for organizers of other meetups who are funding another meetup site.
