What we're about

Declare your independence from the multiplexes and see an independent, foreign classic, documentary or any thought provoking movie. We meet at landmarks like the Cedar Lee, Cinematheque, Art Museum, or a university and often walk to a locally owned restaurant to engage others on the film's true meaning.

Recommended contribution is $5 for the year. Fees are waived for active organizers of this group.

DESCRIPTION This touching new feature marks an auspicious debut for a Texas-born African American filmmaker. Nicole Beharie plays a Fort Worth single mom who has faced hardship since being crowned "Miss Juneteenth" when she was a teenager. Now she’s preparing her own daughter for the local pageant (and the college scholarship that accompanies it), but the rebellious 15-year-old resists. "Critic’s Pick…Explores how black women and girls navigate and support each other in a world that often fails them." Please rent it here as it helps the Cinematheque https://vimeo.com/ondemand/ciamissjuneteenth REVIEW Marking an impressive directorial debut, Miss Juneteenth is a straightforward story of mothers and daughters... It's also a terrific showcase for star Nicole Beharie. https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/19/entertainment/miss-juneteenth/index.html Rotten Tomatoes: 99% CHIPPING IN OPTIONS The group is successful because we have so many people who chip in. A Dry White Season

Online event

EUZHAN PALCY A Dry White Season With this bracing drama, made at the climax of the anti-apartheid movement, director Euzhan Palcy issued a devastating indictment of South Africa’s racist government—and made history in the process, becoming the first black woman to direct a Hollywood studio film. White schoolteacher Ben Du Toit (Donald Sutherland) lives in Johannesburg and remains blissfully incurious about the lives of his black countrymen until a wave of brutal treatment comes crashing down on his gardener (Winston Ntshona), bringing Du Toit face-to-face with harsh political realities. Based on a celebrated novel by André Brink and rooted in the first-hand research the Martinican Palcy did in South Africa into the way black people lived under apartheid, A Dry White Season is unflinching in its depiction of violence and its chronicling of injustice, making for a galvanizing tribute to those willing to sacrifice everything to fight oppression.
