Its the new year and of course my website bills are coming due. If you can either pay online (link in the left hand column) or pay your organizer the $5 for the year, it would be much appreciated. This also pays for guest film directors and appreciation movies for organizers.
Many critics believe that 2011 was not a great year for movies. I tend to agree. Nothing really stood out so far like Social Network, King's Speech or Animal Kingdom ( a superb indy film). That said, here are some of my favorites from last year.
Margin Call - Very enlightening on how the financial crisis might have started
Little Rock - Fred Thorton, a former Clevelander, met with the group after seeing the movie. Yes, it was an independent film, but it was really good. I was very affected by this movie.
The Descendants - George Clooney is losing his luster - and making better films
The Hedgehog - I like the movie better than the book. Great French story.
Drive - Ryan Gosling is great in this movie
Louder than a Bomb - Any documentation about teenagers reciting poetry that can keep my attention has to be good
Incendies - This foreign film in about 3 languages is about children learning about their mother's past after she dies. A shocker at the end.
Bill Cunningham - A great documentary about this iconic photographer who is in his 80's and continues to attend every major party in New York
Of Gods and Men - A true story about monks who are threatened by terrorists. This is an amazing movie which really affected me a lot.
Win Win - Paul Giamatti was great in this coming of age film.
What films most affected you?????
Speaking of films, Intolerance, perhaps one of the greatest Silent films of all time is coming to the Cinematheque. It has a live piano and could be fairly crowded. Join the group on Saturday at 7:15.
Then, next Saturday, the Iron Lady has been delayed. In my opinion, all for the good since there is this fantastic French film worth seeing. It was reviewed 56 times with 55 of the reviews positive. Don't miss Le Havre. Also at the Cinematheque.
Finally, three film festivals begin this month. Case Sci Fi Marathon, Kent State and the Lakeland International film festival. Look over the movies. If any of them catch your fancy, consider organizing one. The Lakeland films are free! Just let me know. Thanks.
