Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) at Cinmatheque and Sittoo afterwards
Cinematheque at Cleveland Institute of Art, 11610 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH, USThis is a film I watch on VHS about 30 years ago. I want to tell people upfront to learn something about the film and decided for yourself if you want to watch it. Right after Diane Keaton death, I thought about this film and I believe it's her best and most difficult work. The New York Times trashed the film and said that Diane Keaton is too good to waste on the sort of material the movie provides. Diane Keaton plays Treresa Dunn who is a teacher of deaf children in the day time, and goes bar hopping at night to meet men.
Treresa had polio as a child that made her childhood difficult. I don't think she is "easy", but she is in need of continuous validation which she gets through her meetings with men at the bar. The problem is when the men she meets are violent with a mix of drugs and alcohol. The man she dislikes the most in this film I think is the "nice guy" who would like to marry her. I don't think I have seen a film about a women's story like this film. This is not an easy movie, but I think the film is worth it. Please join the group for a chance to see Looking for Mr. Goodbar with much discussion afterwards. Meet by the benches and Sittoo's after the film.
